With three withdrawals from the original entry list, a field of 17 will line up next Saturday for the Gran Premio Joaquín S. de Anchorena (G1), the race that will decide the season’s top turf miler at the Hipódromo de San Isidro and the traditional companion to the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini (G1).

Top-level action is guaranteed with the presence of What a Man (Mastercraftsman) and Earth God (Cosmic Trigger). The former comes off an easy victory in the Gran Premio San Isidro (G1), while the latter has just returned to prominence with his score in the Gran Premio Palermo (G1) on the dirt at Avenida del Libertador y Dorrego, turning back El Exito (Il Campione).

They are far from the only strong names in the Anchorena. Also in the lineup are Kopke (Hi Happy), winner of the Clásico Ecuador (G2), runner-up in the San Isidro and fourth in the Palermo; Qué Tarde Gris (Il Campione), who returns to the conditions under which he captured the Clásico 9 de Julio (G2); the mares Fiesta Porteña (Fortify) and Escolastic Girl (Suggestive Boy); and Descamisado (Cosmic Trigger), who arrives with a series of strong placings.

The race gains additional star power with Italian legend Lanfranco Dettori, who will ride Hi Scottish (Hi Happy), a homebred of Stud-Haras La Providencia who has yet to meet expectations.

Rounding out the field are Adorado Rim (Remote), Bluclette Rim (Remote), El Despertar (Il Campione), El Ernesto (Il Campione), Footing Hit (Hit It a Bomb), Le Bang (Le Blues), Nux (Cityscape), Talented Hit (Hit It a Bomb)—coupled with What a Man—and Yak Sport (Glory Seattle).

Among the defections is Storm Sound (Hi Happy), winner of the Clásico Joaquín V. González (G2) at La Plata on Nov. 19 and one of the top early candidates for the Anchorena.

The Anchorena will offer total prize money of 100,000,000 pesos, with 50,000,000 to the winner. Post positions will be drawn this afternoon at 1 p.m. on the fourth floor of the San Isidro grandstand.
