Fast and Fearless Mares Set for Evenly Matched Feature at El Bosque; Bayonne Returns, but Faces No Easy Task in Wide-Open Affair

LA PLATA.- It will be all about speed Thursday at La Plata, where the 1000-meter Clásico Caballerizas Argentinas headlines the day’s action. Open to fillies and mares aged three and up under weight-for-age conditions, the feature has drawn a compact but competitive field of seven, each with a legitimate chance to strike—starting with the returning Bayonne (Puerto Escondido).
A multiple winner over the track, Bayonne heads back to a venue that has seen many of her best performances following a forgettable try at Palermo. In her penultimate start, representing Caballeriza Pitico, she turned in a powerhouse effort in the Clásico Diego M. Argüello, dominating from gate to wire and stopping the clock in a sharp 1:04.53, four lengths clear of High Rimoout (Remote).
The task will be tougher this time, however, in a race loaded with early speed. Several rivals, including Doña Chila (Peten Itza), Beauty Check (Safety Check), and Lissette Island (Lizard Island), are likely to engage early, setting the stage for a frantic dash from start to finish.
Of those, Lissette Island looms as a major threat. She stepped up to stakes company in last month’s Clásico Snow Figure at San Isidro and held her own with a solid fourth-place finish, just 2 1/2 lengths behind Bichito de Luz (Fragotero) while involved throughout.
Doña Chila, meanwhile, has not visited the winner’s circle in some time but remains dangerous. She captured the Clásico Lunasia here in December and followed that up with a runner-up effort in the Clásico Aníbal D. Etchart on the northern turf course.
Gurisa Mask (Mask), third to Bayonne in the Diego M. Argüello—beaten six lengths—will be looking for revenge, while seasoned campaigner Creme de Cassis (Sidney’s Candy), nearing her 8th birthday, bids for her 11th lifetime win.
Beauty Check, seventh in the Snow Figure and five lengths behind Lissette Island, appears more suited to this course, and Austen (Fragotero), last-out winner in the allowance ranks, rounds out the field, though she may need to take another step forward to contend.
With its high-speed dynamics and evenly matched field, the Clásico Caballerizas Argentinas promises a thrilling spectacle—one where every meter, and every move, will count.
