Alfredo Gaitán Dassié Named New Trainer for Stud La Providencia

The accomplished horseman will now oversee the runners formerly trained by José Luiz Correa Aranha, a group that includes G1 winner Grezzo

Few trainers in Argentina can match the résumé of Alfredo Gaitán Dassié. With nearly four decades in the game, more than 200 stakes wins, and six victories in the prestigious G1 Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini, the accomplished horseman is now set to embark on a new professional venture.

What had been circulating as a rumor was confirmed in recent hours: Gaitán Dassié will take over the training of Stud La Providencia’s string previously conditioned by José Luiz Correa Aranha, including standout Grezzo (Arg) (Hi Happy), winner of the G1 Gran Premio Miguel A. Martínez de Hoz. As always, Alfredo will work along Nicolás, one of his sons.

“José Luiz has a long-term project in the works to move and train in the United States. Since it’s still uncertain when exactly that will happen, we mutually agreed that a change now made the most sense,” said Oscar López, racing manager for the Depieri family’s operation. “We’ve enjoyed great success working together, and we part ways on excellent terms. I’m sure our paths will cross again in the future.”

López added: “Alfredo will take over around 15 horses—all 2-year-olds, plus Grezzo. The rest of our stock will remain under the care of Pedro Nickel Neto, as always.”

Gaitán Dassié brings deep experience handling major bloodstock, having trained for many of Argentina’s most powerful outfits, including Firmamento, Stud RDI, Pozo de Luna, Futuro, Santa Elena, Vacación, El Manzanar, Anderson, El Alfalfar, Happy End, La Quebrada, La Esperanza, San Francisco de Pilar, Río Claro, Sao José e Expedictus, Santa Inés, and Los Moros, among others.

Since its establishment in Argentina, Stud La Providencia has worked with a select group of trainers: José Alves, Pedro Nickel, Diego Peña, José Luiz Correa Aranha, and Pedro Nickel Neto. Alfredo Gaitán Dassié now joins that distinguished list.

Named Owner of the Year in 2015, La Providencia has remained a major force in the country’s top races, campaigning champions like Hi Happy (Arg) (Pure Prize), Freddy (Arg) (Roy), Ollagua (Arg) (Pure Prize), Juhayna (Arg)(Johannesburg), Jumbalaya (Arg) (Pure Prize), and Kononkop (Arg) (Orpen), as well as G1 winners Candy Nevada (Arg) (Pure Prize), New Real Deal (Arg) (Roy), and Girlie (Arg) (Pure Prize). The list stretches to recent stars such as Giustino (Arg) (Full Mast), winner of the 2024 G1 Gran Premio Polla de Potrillos, and the aforementioned Grezzo.
