LA PLATA.- The record speaks for itself: many quality fillies have passed through the hands of veteran trainer Angel Piana—among them Travelwell (True Cause), Una Arrabalera (Cima de Triomphe), Celestial Filly (Lizard Island), Jin Jin (Full Mast), and Gran Mirella (Dabster). On Tuesday at La Plata, he added another name to that list when Mis Locurastoppled favored Elenika (Winning Prize) in the Clásico Diego White (G3), the feature of an entertaining midweek program.

“We had confidence in her, but it was a very tough race,” said Piana, known simply as Beto, in his first words to the microphone of Daniel Sinegub. “Everything worked out—easier than we expected, because we thought we’d just be close. Luckily, they let us win. She needs to run up front because she doesn’t like to be bothered. The result makes us very happy.”

Piana reflected candidly on the current state of his barn: “This year I don’t have as many good horses, but we’re working hard every day to try to improve with what we’ve got. We get up early, we do the work, we try to keep them sound. There aren’t many secrets. Hard work alone doesn’t win races, but we do our best.”

He also recalled a personal story about one of his past stars: “I like going to the sales to choose horses. I went a lot with Jorge Brunasco, and we did well. I remember I actually bought Travelwell for myself, but during the trip home I ended up turning her over to the people who became her owners.”

Looking ahead, Piana confirmed the long-term goal for Mis Locuras: “The idea is to run her in the Selección (G1). That’s what the owner wants. We’ll see how she comes out of this and start working toward it.”

Winning rider Miguel O. Sosa, who was celebrating his first major success since returning from a short injury layoff, added: “It was a good race. She broke well, got comfortable, and when they came for her, she still had plenty left. We’ve always had a lot of confidence in her, and I know her well. She was doing great and responded to the trainer’s work. Thankfully, everything went just as we hoped. Beto has supported me since day one, and having his trust means a lot.”

With her natural speed now complemented by proven class over a mile, Mis Locuras gives Piana and Sosa every reason to dream of bigger prizes—perhaps even at the Grade I level.
