Sale Doubles Last Year’s Gross and Confirms the Strength of the U.S. Broodmare Market; Average Rises Over 37%

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (Special to Turf Diario) — The second session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale delivered another day of high-level commercial activity, reaffirming the strength of the U.S. broodmare market and a strong appetite from domestic breeders.
A total of 235 horses—mares and weanlings—sold for $47,362,000, representing a 60.88% increase over the same day in 2024, when 201 head grossed $29.44 million. The average price surged 37.6% to $201,540, while the median climbed 33.3% to $160,000.
The day’s headline act was Anywho, a daughter of Bolt d’Oro in foal to Not This Time, purchased by the Raging Torrent Syndicate for $1.3 million—the first seven-figure transaction on Day 2 since 2022. With that sale, the number of million-dollar horses in the 2025 catalog rose to 18, double the nine achieved last year.
“It was an outstanding day,” said Tony Lacy, Keeneland’s Vice President of Sales. “A 61% increase in total receipts and a 78% clearance rate point to a very healthy marketplace. There was strong energy and real competition for quality mares throughout the session.”
Cormac Breathnach, Director of Sales Operations, echoed that optimism: “We sold 235 horses to 180 different buyers. That shows both the depth of demand and genuine competition across the board. It was a lively day with plenty of real activity.”
For consignor James Keogh of Grovendale Sales, who sold the session-topper, the result was both emotional and rewarding. “It’s always a pleasure to sell a million-dollar mare,” he said. “Anywho was an exceptional broodmare prospect—there wasn’t a flaw to be found. Behind this kind of success is a huge team that works with dedication every day. Keeneland is in my DNA.”
The same buyer, Raging Torrent Syndicate, continued its aggressive approach, also securing Very Scary (Connect), a graded-placed mare in foal to Into Mischief, for $625,000.
Leading consignor honors for the day went to Taylor Made Sales Agency, which sold 31 horses for $8.165 million. Among its highlights were two mares in foal that each brought $750,000: Who’s Ticket (Quality Road—Take Charge Brandi), purchased by Finn Green in foal to Practical Joke, and Golden Ghost (Medaglia d’Oro—Villa Marina), acquired by Thirty Year Farm in foal to Not This Time.
The weanling market also showed vigor, topped by two $550,000 youngsters: a filly by Horse of the Year Cody’s Wish and a colt by Elite Power, both from the first crops of those champions.
“We’re seeing something special in the Cody’s Wish foals,” noted buyer Randy Hartley, who purchased the filly on behalf of Tom Durant. “We were determined to get one, and she was the standout of the session.”
After two sessions, the sale’s cumulative figures reached $120,099,000 for 357 horses, up 30.8% from 2024, with sharp increases in both average and median prices.
The auction continues Thursday at 10 a.m. with the second part of Book 2, running through Tuesday, November 11, followed by the Horses of Racing Age Sale on Wednesday, November 12, beginning at noon.
