The son of Dubawi took a massive leap in class by storming to a 7 1/2-length victory in Saturday's Sky Bet Strensall Stakes (G3) at York

KNAVESMIRE, England (Special for Turf Diario).— What appeared on paper to be an even contest ended up transforming into a absolute exhibition. Archivist tore the form book to pieces in the Sky Bet Strensall Stakes(G3-1,771m), opening Saturday's Ebor program at York, and proved with a 7 1/2-length victory that his sharp progression over recent weeks is nowhere near reaching its ceiling.
With Callum Rodriguez in the irons, the representative of Wathnan Racing made the transition from handicap ranks to group level without batting an eye. On the contrary: the further the race went, the better he looked, until he cleared away completely isolated from his rivals.
Sent off at 9-1, the pupil of Hamad Al Jehani arrived off a victory three weeks ago in the Golden Mile at Goodwood, where he had pulled off a minor upset. That performance invited a shot at a higher level, and the response could not have been more resounding.
Archivist was already familiar with what it takes to win at the Knavesmire, having prevailed there during the summer of 2025. However, what he accomplished this time belonged to a whole different dimension.
Callum Rodriguez allowed him to settle through the early stages, and when he elected to make his move, it quickly became clear he had far more horse under him than his opponents. Even the jockey would acknowledge afterwards that he struck earlier than intended simply because Archivist was cruising too comfortably to keep waiting.
Behind him, Saber Strike (Night of Thunder) kept responding to the whip to claim second, while Persica (New Bay) finished third. The race favorite Damysus (Frankel), stablemate and silks partner to the winner ridden by James Doyle, could do no better than fourth.
"He is improving fast," acknowledged Hamad Al Jehani. "After the Golden Mile at Goodwood we knew he was progressing, and he had been training really well."
The conditioner had targeted this race ever since, and Archivist ended up exceeding even those expectations. "We were looking forward to this race and he won again in very impressive fashion. I'm so happy for the whole team. Hopefully he's a G1 horse," added the trainer, who also celebrated a deeply personal milestone: "It's my first winner at York, so we are going to enjoy it and tomorrow we'll build a plan."
The sheer authority of the performance took even the Wathnan team by surprise. Richard Brown, racing advisor for the powerful Qatari operation, admitted they expected a big run, though not such total dominance.
"This took us a bit by surprise. We thought he had a great chance and James Doyle had a tough decision picking his ride. We knew Archivist was still progressing," he explained.
James Doyle ultimately opted for Damysus, but it was Archivist who delivered a statement victory capable of reshaping all future plans.
"Now we can probably be quite brave," Richard Brown noted regarding the next challenge. He then shared a brief anecdote right after the race: "Hamad Al Jehani asked me, 'Now what?' I told him, 'First go collect the trophy.' We'll have plenty of time to think about it later."
The next step will require careful analysis, though the team seems to have identified a key factor to unlock Archivist's best: racing with a turn.
"I think a bend is important for him. I know there's a long straight here, but the turn helps him relax," Richard Brownexplained.
He also relayed the jockey's post-race feedback: "Callum Rodriguez said he made his move too early, but the horse was going so well he had no other option."
Perhaps that image best captured the Strensall. While his rivals were beginning to feel the whip, Archivist was still waiting for permission to unleash his full engine. When he was finally let loose, the race was put to bed in a matter of strides.
A mere three weeks ago, he was a handicap winner at Goodwood. This Saturday, he made the leap to G3 company and scored by 7 1/2 lengths, leaving the impression that he still has plenty more to offer.
Wathnan Racing and Hamad Al Jehani will take a few hours before mapping out the route ahead.
After such a display, targeting a G1 no longer looks like an overly ambitious dream for Archivist.
