Atomic Trigger is showing flashes of the form that once saw him take on the likes of Ever Daddy (Daddy Long Legs) and El Kodigo (Equal Stripes). In peak condition these days, the Stud To-No-Go runner turned in another sparkling effort—this time on the dirt at San Isidro—to capture Wednesday’s feature, the Egg Toss H., on an otherwise quiet card.

A winner of the Potrillazo H. at Palermo last time, the chestnut stretched successfully from 1400 meters to 1800 here, carrying 57.5 kilos—one of the heaviest imposts in the field—and making every yard of the running with authority.

Ridden decisively by Osvaldo Alderete, the son of Cosmic Trigger seized command from the start and never allowed multiple stakes winner Super Inter (Super Saver), the 60.5-kilo topweight, to get on even terms. Once they straightened, Atomic Trigger angled out to the middle of the track and quickly put his rival away.

From there, it was smooth sailing. The winner crossed the line 1 1/2 lengths clear of Tamarisco Cat (Knockout, 50.5), who was three lengths in front of El Bolivariano (Il Campione, 54.5). Super Inter, returning from a layoff, never factored and wound up seventh, 14 lengths behind. At seven, he may still deserve another chance, though his best form may well be behind him—particularly away from Palermo, where he has always been at his best.

Trained by Elvio Bortulé and bred by Haras Abolengo, Atomic Trigger is out of the Southern Halo mare Atomic Boom, from a notable imported family responsible for champion El Moisés (Manipulator) as well as black-type winners Smeraldina (Sidney’s Candy), Angie (Angiolo) and Anacarsis (Angiolo).

It was the sixth win in 22 career starts for Atomic Trigger, his second above the handicap level, and his connections can once again dare to dream of a return to stakes company.
