Ayra Stark finally found at Churchill Downs the reward she had deserved for quite some time

After three consecutive stakes runner-up finishes, the Argentine mare finally earned the breakthrough she had long deserved, wiring the field in the Keertana Stakes (L) over the turf at Churchill Downs
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (Special to Turf Diario).- After several frustrating near-misses, a string of top-class performances without quite getting the reward, and even a sales ring appearance where she failed to meet her reserve, Argentina’s Ayra Stark reminded everyone this weekend that patience is often rewarded. Over the turf at Churchill Downs, and displaying all of her stamina, the daughter of Cosmic Trigger secured the most important victory of her American campaign when capturing the Keertana Stakes (L), a US$209,000 event contested over 2400 meters.
It was a victory with a strong Argentine flavor.
Bred by Haras Juan Antonio and out of Delfia (Exchange Rate), the bay mare had begun her U.S. campaign under the care of Ignacio Correas IV after being acquired by Correas/Cambas Bloodstock. Even after failing to reach her reserve when bidding stalled at US$725,000 during the 2025 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, she continued building an increasingly strong résumé before finally earning a breakthrough victory of major significance.
The triumph also carried special meaning because it came several months after Correas retired from training.
Following that decision, the mare transferred to the barn of Horacio De Paz, the Mexican conditioner who ultimately found the right formula to return Ayra Stark to center stage.
And truthfully, the mare had been knocking loudly on the door for some time.
Prior to the Keertana, she had compiled three consecutive stakes runner-up finishes, including two at the Grade 3 level, highlighted by a narrow defeat to Sultana (Always Dreaming) in the Orchid Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park.
Ironically, the absence of that rival here created a much more favorable scenario for a mare who appears increasingly comfortable over extended distances.
With Jose Ortiz delivering an inspired ride, Ayra Stark broke alertly and immediately assumed control.
Ortiz quickly recognized there was very little speed in the race and executed the perfect script: comfortable fractions, controlled tempo, and the constant impression that the Argentine mare always had something left in reserve.
She cruised through early splits of :24.79, :49.94, 1:15.04, and 1:40.50 over turf rated good, conserving energy while her rivals struggled to keep within striking range.
Only over the final 800 meters did serious challenges begin to emerge, first from Virgin Colada (More Than Ready)and later from the closing rallies of Venencia (Recoletos), Way to Be Marie (Not This Time), and Golden Sunshine (Medaglia d’Oro).
But Ayra Stark never showed the slightest sign of weakening.
She straightened for home still firmly in command and ultimately pulled away by 2 3/4 lengths, completing the mile and a half in 2:27.89 while finishing with a dazzling final quarter-mile in :23.34 that definitively settled matters.
“On paper, it looked like there wasn’t much other speed,” Ortiz explained afterward. “The idea was to break sharply and take command early. She did it perfectly, relaxed beautifully, and finished strongly.”
The jockey also delivered a quote that perfectly summarizes the mare’s current moment:
“I think any distance between 2000 and 2400 meters suits her really well, but I’m undefeated with her at a mile and a half, so I’ll stick with that.”
It is hardly a coincidence.
In her only previous attempt at 2400 meters in the United States, Ayra Stark had already shined at Keeneland, winning a second-level allowance by 4 1/4 lengths last October.
Now, at six years old, the Argentine mare appears to have fully found her ideal niche.
The victory boosted her earnings to US$362,653 and improved her overall record to seven wins from 16 starts, further solidifying an international campaign that continues to grow while once again carrying Argentine racing’s prestige proudly onto the global stage.
