The Wesley Ward-trained colt emerges as the morning-line favorite for this Friday's Coolmore City Of Troy Nunthorpe Stakes (G1) at York, where he faces a steep class rise. Asfoora, Rayevka, American Affair, Mission Central, and Satono Reve headline a formidable field of 17 rivals

KNAVESMIRE, England (Special for Turf Diario).— Wesley Ward has spent years turning his cross-Atlantic trips from the United States to Europe into a tradition, particularly when he has pure speed to display. This Friday, he will attempt it once more in one of the British calendar's premier sprints, saddling Bacio in the Coolmore City Of Troy Nunthorpe Stakes (G1) at York.

The 3-year-old colt emerges as the likely market choice among the 18 contenders holding firm for the blistering 1,000 meters on the Knavesmire, though he faces a challenge fundamentally distinct from anything he has conquered to date.

Bacio has suffered defeat just once in five career starts and generated immense buzz during Royal Ascot, where he posted an emphatic victory in the Palace of Holyroodhouse Handicap, competing off an official mark of 100.

That performance instantly catapulted him into the Nunthorpe conversation, but he must now prove his speed can prove decisive against proven, top-tier international sprinters. The opposition is both deep and global. Asfoora (Flying Artie), Australia's high-class sprinting mare, stands as a formidable threat, alongside French challenger Rayevka (Blue Point), Scottish-trained American Affair (Washington DC), and Mission Central (No Nay Never), representing Aidan O'Brien.

Another major point of intrigue comes courtesy of Pershaada (Persian Force), saddled by Richard Hannon. A recent winner at Goodwood, the 2-year-old filly will receive up to 27 pounds from some of her older rivals—a massive weight break that adds extra spice to the intergenerational clash.

Richard Hannon will also attempt to replicate a special piece of family history. His father captured the Nunthorpe in 1992 with Lyric Fantasy (Tate Gallery), the famed "Pocket Rocket," who was likewise a juvenile when accomplishing the feat.

Bacio's presence places Wesley Ward back on familiar ground. The American conditioner built much of his international reputation by shipping precocious, fast horses to Europe’s marquee meetings, and now bets on a colt with plenty left to prove, but whose raw potential made enough of an impression to jump straight from a Royal Ascothandicap into a G1.

Friday’s card at York features two additional Group contests.

In the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes (G2, 1,200 meters), 12 juveniles will head to the gates, led by Arapaho Gold (Bayside Boy), Adaay Of Scarlett (Mehmas), and Mrair (Mehmas), all taking on Ballydoyle’s representative Marco Polo (Night of Thunder). Agamemnon (Mehmas), Final Objective (Sioux Nation), and Mussab (Ten Sovereigns) also figure prominently in the mix.

Meanwhile, nine stayers were confirmed for the Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup (G2, 3,200 meters). Caballo De Mar(Phoenix of Spain) will look to bounce back from a disappointing effort at Royal Ascot, while Ralph Beckett’s Amiloc (Postponed) aims to put behind a frustrating mishap in the Goodwood Cup, where he unseated his rider shortly after the break.

Al Nayyir (Dubawi), Carmers (Wootton Bassett), and Mount Atlas (Masar) bring solid formlines to the table, while Aidan O'Brien relies on Illinois (Galileo) following the withdrawal of Lambourn (Australia). Willie Mullins, world-renowned for his dominance over jumps, will send out his own contender in Columbus (Oasis Dream).
