LINGFIELD, Inglaterra (Especial para Turf Diario).- The British calendar closed with a historic flourish as Billy Loughnane became the most prolific rider of the 21st century, reaching 222 winners to eclipse the mark set by Kieren Fallon back in 2003. The milestone came right on the bell on Dec. 31 at Lingfield Park, courtesy of Loughnane’s penultimate ride of 2025.

The landmark victory arrived aboard Invited (Kodiac), the 5-4 Middleham Park favorite, who made all under controlled fractions before kicking on at the top of the straight. Hitched (Cotai Glory), partnered by Luke Morris, closed hard late, but Invited held on by a neck—just enough for Loughnane to pass Fallon’s long-standing tally. The success also marked a double celebration, as it delivered trainer George Boughey his 100th winner of the year.

Though Loughnane went winless on his other four mounts on the card, the single success was sufficient to etch his name into the record books. The outright British record for most Flat winners in a year remains the province of Gordon Richards, who rode 269 in 1947, but Loughnane’s achievement stands as a defining modern benchmark.

Relief and emotion followed. “I’m relieved,” said Loughnane. “There was a bit of pressure today, but I’m delighted to get it done—and to do it for George as well. It means a lot.” He was quick to acknowledge those who fueled his rise: “I wouldn’t be where I am without George backing me from day one. Thanks as well to Charlie Appleby and the Godolphin team, my dad Mark, and all the trainers who put their faith in me.”

For context, Fallon’s 2003 mark came from 1,055 rides; Loughnane needed 1,321 mounts to surpass it. Oisin Murphy sits third and fourth on the modern list, with 220 winners from 1,106 rides in 2019 and 217 from 996 in 2024.

Ambitious yet self-aware, Loughnane closed on a note of humility: “I love riding—I get bored when I’m not. Looking at the names I’m alongside now is extraordinary. I’m not at the level of many of them yet, but hopefully one day I will be.” For 2025, the history books already have him.
