Blue Bolt and Precise, face-to-face once again, now in the Matron Stakes

Andrew Balding's representative will go this Saturday for her third consecutive G1 victory at Leopardstown, after defeating Ballydoyle's multiple champion twice in a row. Fallen Angel will defend her crown, while City Of Memphisemerges as a rapidly ascending rival

DUBLIN, Ireland (Special for Turf Diario).— Blue Bolt (Blue Point) and Precise (Starspangledbanner) have already built a classic rivalry, and there is still another chapter left to be written. This Saturday, they will meet once again in the Coolmore America “Justify” Matron Stakes (G1-1600m), one of the landmark events of the Irish Champions Festival, after the Andrew Balding trainee emerged victorious in their two most recent clashes.

First came the Falmouth Stakes (G1), followed by the Prix Rothschild (G1). On both occasions, Blue Bolt managed to prevail over a Precise who already boasts four top-level victories and stood as the undisputed benchmark among Europe's premier distaffers for much of the season.

Now, Balding's filly will attempt to complete a hat-trick of consecutive G1 wins, though she must overcome an added obstacle: she was assigned an outside post position, a factor that could complicate her trip and hand Precise a concrete opportunity to reverse the outcome of their last two meetings.

The Ballydoyle representative has more than enough quality to pull it off. Among her four G1 triumphs are the Irish 1000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes, and Aidan O’Brien will look to break an unusual dry spell in a race that has historically treated him well: he has not won the Matron since Hydrangea (Galileo) in 2017.

O’Brien will also rely on True Love (No Nay Never), winner of the 1000 Guineas (G1) at Newmarket, who returns to the mile following a series of defeats. Reverting to the distance of her greatest triumph could help her cause, though her recent outings leave questions when stacked against rivals arriving in peak form.

Another champion in need of recapturing her best level is Fallen Angel. The Karl Burke trainee knows Leopardstown inside and out. She finished second in this very race in 2024 and returned twelve months later to capture the title. She has raced just twice this season and comes off an effort well below her capabilities, though any rain falling ahead of post time will bolster her chances. Burke also understands what it takes to score back-to-back wins in the Matron, having previously celebrated here with Laurens (Siyouni) in 2018.

Diversity has been a defining characteristic of this contest in recent years. Eight different stables have claimed victory over the last decade, while the last three betting favorites lived up to expectations—a mix that highlights both the field's competitiveness and the market's ability to spot the key figures.

Among those seeking to disrupt the established order is City Of Memphis (Sioux Nation), perhaps the most intriguing entry in the field.

Paddy Twomey targeted the Matron early in the campaign, and the filly progressed steadily to earn her shot at the highest level. The Irish conditioner already knows how to pull off a shock here: in 2022, he took the race with Pearls Galore (Invincible Spirit) at 16-1 odds. This step will serve as the ultimate test to determine City Of Memphis's ceiling in a race where virtually every major contender has something substantial on the line.

Fallen Angel defends her title; True Love needs to restore the brilliance she displayed in the 1000 Guineas; Preciseseeks revenge after two straight defeats; and Blue Bolt sets her sights on something even greater.

After dominating the Falmouth and the Rothschild, Balding's filly stands before the opportunity to complete a formidable G1 treble. Precise, naturally, will aim to make the third time the charm.
