The legacy of the remarkable Blues For Sale (Not for Sale) has a new milestone: Blue Caviar (Equal Stripes). The colt impressed with a strong victory this Saturday at Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo, beginning to shape his profile as a contender for the Gran Premio Nacional (G1), Argentina’s Derby.
The dam of champions Blue Prize (Pure Prize) and Blue Stripe (Equal Stripes), as well as other talented runners like Barón Blue (Orpen), Blue Orchid (Orpen), and Blue’s Melodie (Pure Prize), among others, delivers yet another high-class foal with plenty of potential—a pattern now familiar.
The victory was celebrated by the team at Haras Pozo de Luna, where the colt was raised, proudly carrying the farm’s colors. The outstanding mare is currently in foal to Fortify (Distorted Humor), preparing for her thirteenth foal, having missed only one year (2019) in her breeding career. At José Cerrillo’s farm, she foaled Blue Stripe, and previously, during her time at Carampangue for La Manija, she produced Blue Prize.
Returning to Blue Caviar, the colt confirmed the promise he showed in his prior win over the same 1800-meter distance. After debuting with a seventh-place finish in which inexperience showed, he gained valuable experience and now demonstrated his full potential.
In a race that was practically conditional, as often happens in many alternative classics, Blue Caviar, under trainer Nicolás Martín Ferro, ran from mid-pack, gradually advancing and showing his best stride down the stretch. A long-striding colt, he was guided by Kevin Banegas, who gave him freedom to maintain a smooth rhythm.
Don Zahir (Daddy Long Legs) set the pace through the backstretch, yielding the lead to Uncle Moi (Uncle Mo) as they entered the final stretch. At that point, the winner angled toward the center, weaving between the leader and Bay Max(Gouverneur Morris). Gordianus (Señor Candy) also challenged from wider, but Blue Caviar stayed steady, opening a two-length advantage over Gordianus, with Uncle Moi finishing third, 2½ lengths behind. The favorite, Hijo de Nadie(Cosmic Trigger), who had beaten him on debut, finished last, more than 40 lengths adrift, in a performance well below expectations. The final time was 1:49.56, over a second faster than the Beazley (G2), on firm ground.
Next up for Blue Caviar is the Clásico Eduardo Casey, as his trainer prefers races for development over hard morning workouts, especially at longer distances where schooling is critical. If all goes well, the ultimate target remains the Gran Premio Nacional.
At Pozo de Luna, preparations are underway to send Blue Corner (Daddy Long Legs) to stud—a spectacular colt and the next hope for Blues For Sale. Meanwhile, the team is anxiously awaiting the recovery of Blue Tequila (Fortify), the 2024 foal of the incomparable mare, who was injured in a paddock incident. Dreams are being realized, others are on the horizon, and some are unfolding right now—all thanks to her.
