The weights proved impossible to handle for the top contenders, and the Handicap Good Time (1600 m, normal dirt)—the first of the stakes events adorning a dull Monday card at Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo—ended with a major surprise.

Glory went to the La Plata-based Boyero Spring, who, at odds of $ 21.40, returned to the spotlight and won with absolute authority, reaching the fifth victory of his campaign.

With Martín Valle in the irons, the son of Greenspring had not reached the winner's circle since May of last year, when he took the Clásico Ap Candy in La Plata, crowning a series of interesting performances at that time.

Carrying 53 1/2 kilos, Boyero Spring was impressive. Last for much of the trip, he rounded the turn very wide, giving up significant ground. However, once he found the stretch, his stride was overwhelming, quickly closing the gaps and sweeping past the leader Atomic Trigger (Cosmic Trigger, 60 1/2) in the final furlong.

At the wire, it was 3 lengths that he eventually put between himself and El Gazpacho (Bodemeister, 57 1/2), who snatched the runner-up spot from the leader in the very last jump, taking advantage of the latter's fatigue from the effort. Meanwhile, the favorite and topweight Emergent (Il Campione, 61) finished fourth by a neck, after a slight stumble during the closing stages that might have deprived him of a better finish. The winning time was 1m36s72/100 on a track that heartfully welcomed the weekend rains.

Owned by Stud Los Caños and trained by Esteban Brown—who returned to saddling after serving a suspension—Boyero Spring is out of Beautiful Star (American Chance). She had already produced the stakes winner in Tandil, Candy Billion (Señor Candy), and Bacana Girl (Greenspring), the dam of stakes-placed Echale Azucar (Orpen Ola). This is a family originally imported by Haras La Providencia, including Bloem (Matty G.), Big Deal (American Chance), and Kavac (Cityscape), among others.
