Following a weekend packed with top-level action, Monday's card at Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo takes a more relaxed tone, offering 11 races highlighted by the Handicap Aniversario de la Inauguración del Hipódromo Argentino, a 1200-meter test on the dirt for 4-year-olds and up. Conditions could play a role, as the track has been affected by persistent rain since Sunday.

Among six confirmed starters, Burgess Shale gets another shot at the top prize, with Francisco Leandro set to guide the Safety Check gelding under 58.5 kilos. A model of consistency at the stakes level, he has found wins elusive despite frequent strong efforts against tough company. Last out, he finished a below-par fourth behind Mr Neil (Valid Stripes) in the Handicap Intérprete, a race where the pace scenario worked against him.

Among his main rivals is Tabacano (Fortify, 54), who has bested Burgess Shale before and will look to do it again. The closer comes off a near-miss in allowance company after stretching out to 1400 meters, and now returns to a more suitable trip.

Also in the mix is Despacito (Sabayón, 59), a rugged campaigner from La Pampa with 13 career victories and a knack for turning in standout performances when least expected.
