The Safety Check son comes off defeating him in the Handicap Picacero and will now concede 5 kilos in the Gran Copa Rotary.

The ability the San Isidro Racecourse has developed over time to card races that its management would never have considered in the past is truly remarkable. On another program loaded with weak races—alternatives and other lesser fare—Friday’s action in the north will find its quality lifeline in the Handicap Gran Copa Rotary, to be run over 1300 meters on dirt for 5-year-olds and up, offering a rather disheartening winner’s purse of just $4,200,000, in keeping with a bargain-basement card.
One of the co-topweights, carrying 61 kilos, will be Burgess Shale (Safety Check), who picks up 2 1/2 kilos from the impost he shouldered last month when defeating Flying to the Sky (Señor Candy) by 2 1/2 lengths in the Handicap Picacero. He’ll face that rival again here, with Flying to the Sky still in at 56 kilos.
At the very top of the handicap sits Estero de Ibera (Il Campione), carrying 61 1/2 kilos and dropping in class after a subpar effort in the Clásico Pippermint (G2). Winner of the Clásico Pedro Chapar (G3) and Haras Ojo de Agua (L), he will be looking to bounce back, as always relying on his late kick.
Not far behind in credentials is Giant Rimout (Remote), in at 56 1/2, who caused an upset last time in the Clásico Juan C. Etchechoury, edging Approval Cat (Southern Cat) by half a length. It’s now time for the Blacktype Bloodstock runner to prove he can back it up.
Fresh from solid conditional wins come Señor Moon (E Dubai), 54; Cosa e Mandinga (Qué Vida Buena), 55; and lightweight Decanas Telu (Montelu), 50 1/2. The camp of El Despertar (Il Campione), 57, is hoping for a return to the form that carried him to victories in the Reconquista (L) and Ahmad.
Another looking to regain lost form is King of Wessex (Cosmic Trigger), 54 1/2, who, with a touch of his old spark, could be right in the thick of things.
Post time for the seventh race, the Handicap Gran Copa Rotary, is set for around 5 p.m.
