The daughter of Giant's Pleasure showed no mercy up north, once again proving she's one of the top sprinters in the country—even if there's no G1 tailor-made for her

The running talent of Candy and Giant is nothing short of stirring. If there were top-level races for sprinters around a turn in Argentina, her résumé would almost certainly include a G1 trophy. But with no such contests on the local calendar, the daughter of Giant's Pleasure continues to dominate in the intermediate ranks, as she did Wednesday at San Isidro when she turned the Hándicap Emigrant (1100 meters, dirt) into a dazzling one-horse show on an otherwise lackluster card.
Facing males, toting a demanding highweight of 61 kilos, and up against rivals who share her natural speed, Candy and Giant was electric from the jump, dictating the pace from start to finish with a blend of raw speed and tenacity that left no doubt about who was best. She carved out torrid fractions and still had plenty in reserve for the stretch run, where any sign of fatigue would’ve been understandable—but simply never came.
With Francisco Lavigna aboard, the 6-year-old mare flew from the gates, quickly opening up daylight on the ultra-quick Bambino Duke (Lenovo, 56), posting a jaw-dropping 21.54 for the opening quarter—around a turn. She entered the straight with a clear advantage, though Bank One (Lenovo, 55.5) loomed as a potential late threat.
There would be no catching her. Candy and Giant just kept on motoring, crossing the wire 2 lengths ahead of Bank One, with Rugiente (Il Campione, 58.5) checking in another 1 1/2 back in third. The final time of 1:02.32 was a mere 0.59 seconds off the longstanding track record held by Claro Oscuro (Mutakddim) since April 28, 2010. The split for 800 meters? A blazing 44.72...
Trained by Matías N. González and bred by Lucila Florencia Krieger de Sansuste, Candy and Giant has now won 10 of her 23 starts, with total earnings of 42,068,500 pesos. Seven of those wins have come in stakes company, including scores in the Clásico Jamelao (L) and Clásico Etoile (L). A true marvel on the local sprint scene, even if the G1 spotlight still eludes her.
