Carrying 53 kilos and overcoming traffic trouble in the stretch, the outsider caught Pecado Original near the wire

The stayers division on the San Isidro turf continues to produce one surprise after another, providing clear evidence of a wide-open landscape lacking a dominant figure. At the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini (G1), The Gladiator's Hat (Hat Ninja) saved the local turf from a Brazilian sweep; in the Gran Premio Miguel A. Martínez de Hoz (G1), Thor Medina (Mootasadir) unexpectedly took the trophy in the boardroom. This Wednesday, the Clásico Regimiento de Granaderos a Caballo (L-2200 m, turf) added another unlikely name to the list.
By reeling in the runaway bid of Pecado Original (Global Hunter) near the wire, Castañón Rim finished on top as an outsider, maintaining the strong momentum he has found as he gradually stretches out in distance.
Coming off a pair of allowance victories—one of them in the alternative category—the son of Remote from Stud Blue Comm took full advantage of his 53-kilo assignment. He unleashed an unpolished but effective late run, dodging rivals in the stretch after briefly finding himself in tight quarters along the rail.
The small field helped the bay find a path, and jockey Juan Cruz Villagra made the right tactical moves to secure the ideal result, producing a late surge that Pecado Original could not withstand, eventually prevailing by a half-length.
Another 2 1/2 lengths back, Hit Colchonero (Hit It a Bomb, 58 1/2) finished third, a head in front of the pacesetter Cornwall (Remote, 58). Favorite Peter Tosh (Fortify, 52 1/2) disappointed in fifth, just ahead of a dull comeback effort from Don Mártir (Il Campione, 55 1/2). The final time was 2m13s32/100, following fractions of 24s84/100, 49s33/100, 1m15s68/100, and 1m39s54/100.
Bred by Haras Firmamento and trained by Juan Martín Benesperi, Castañón Rim took a significant step forward, boosting his aspirations for the Gran Premio 25 de Mayo (G1) in two months' time.
