A whip suspension for excessive use has ruled the Aga Khan Studs jockey out of the major October 17 card at Ascot. The Belgian jockey will now carry the responsibility of defending the Champion Stakes title aboard the world's top-rated horse of 2025, while also partnering Rayif in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes

PARIS, France (Special for Turf Diario).— Mickael Barzalona went from the glory of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe(G1) to unexpected frustration in just a matter of days. The French jockey, who last Sunday guided Daryz (Sea the Stars) to his second consecutive victory in Europe's premier race, will be unable to participate in QIPCO British Champions Day on October 17 at Ascot. A two-day whip suspension for exceeding the permitted strike limit has ruled him out of a card where he had assignments of huge significance.

The situation forced Aga Khan Studs to seek a replacement for two of its main stars, with the call going to Christophe Soumillon, who will now partner Calandagan (Gleneagles) in the Qatar Racing Champion Stakes (G1) and Rayif(Sea the Moon) in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (G1).

For the Belgian, a ten-time champion jockey in France, it represents an extraordinary opportunity to don the iconic silks of one of international racing's most prestigious operations once again.

Barzalona's suspension stemmed from the recent Arc meeting at ParisLongchamp, where he won the Prix de Royallieu (G1) aboard Fairy Glen (Farhh), trained by Simon and Ed Crisford.

In that contest, he used his whip five times—one more than allowed under local rules. The infraction triggered a two-day ban that directly overlaps with Champions Day and cannot be deferred.

The penalty carries major sporting consequences, particularly as it prevents him from pursuing a double of huge significance: winning the Arc with Daryz and, just two weeks later, capturing the Champion Stakes with Calandagan.

Soumillon's main task will be to guide the Francis-Henri Graffard-trained Calandagan in the £1,300,000 Champion Stakes.

The Aga Khan Studs representative will attempt to repeat his victory from 2025, when he defeated Ombudsman(Night of Thunder) and Delacroix (Dubawi) in one of the signature performances of his remarkable campaign.

That triumph was part of a global tour that saw him capture four G1 events and earn recognition as the world's top-rated racehorse of 2025.

Following his Ascot victory, Calandagan traveled to Japan and secured a historic triumph in the Japan Cup (G1), becoming the first European-trained horse to win the race in 20 years.

Both the Champion Stakes and the Japan Cup shared top honors as the highest-rated international races run during that season.

The chance to repeat at Ascot represents far more than defending a title: it is another opportunity to affirm the stature of a horse that already occupies a revered place among recent racing legends.

Soumillon will also pick up the mount on Rayif, a dual G1 winner over the mile, who lines up in the £1,100,000 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

Aga Khan Studs officially confirmed both bookings in a statement:

"Calandagan, winner of the 2025 Champion Stakes, and Rayif, a dual G1 winner over the mile, will be ridden by Christophe Soumillon during British Champions Day. They will compete in the Champion Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, respectively," the operation announced.

The jockey switch comes during an exceptionally busy week for Aga Khan Studs, which must also resolve the future of Daryz.

The two-time Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner recently bested Bay City Roller (New Bay) once again at ParisLongchamp, a performance that reaffirmed his place at the apex of global racing.

Coincidentally, Bay City Roller is among the prospective runners for the upcoming Champion Stakes, adding another layer of intrigue to a race that will feature Calandagan as one of its main attractions.

As for Daryz, his connections will soon decide whether he stays in training to pursue further glory or retires to stand at stud.

For Barzalona, the contrast could not be starker. His monumental triumph in the Arc was immediately followed by a suspension that deprives him of one of the most important meetings on the European calendar.

Soumillon, by contrast, handed a top-tier opportunity: to ride the world's highest-rated horse of 2025 in defense of one of his flagship titles and partner another G1 winner on a card set to bring together the elite of European racing.
