HOT SPRINGS, Arkansas (Special to Turf Diario)— Racing logic doesn't always prevail on the biggest stages. On Saturday at Oaklawn Park, the script was completely rewritten as Claret Beret delivered a stunning performance to capture the $1.25 million Apple Blossom Handicap (G1), leaving the champion Nitrogen (Medaglia d'Oro) without answers.

In the 1,700-meter test, the daughter of Not This Time traveled with supreme confidence. Under a masterful ride by Micah Husbands, she settled into third early as Blue Fire (Aurelius Maximus) dictated fractions of :23.70, :46.87, and 1:10.86.

Claret Beret loomed large rounding the final turn and seized control as the field straightened for home. From there, it was a display of pure dominance. She kicked clear by 3 1/2 lengths in mid-stretch and widened that margin to 4 1/2 lengths at the wire, stopping the clock in 1:42.21.

The heavy favorite Nitrogen, conditioned by Mark Casse, had to settle for second, failing to make any impression on the winner's lead. Majestic Oops (Majestic Harbor) rounded out the trifecta.

This victory marked a massive milestone for Claret Beret, securing her first top-level success. It also confirmed her steady upward trajectory for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., coming off a win in the Royal Delta Stakes (G3). "I'm so proud of her and of Micah, who gave her a perfect ride," said Joseph Jr.

For jockey Micah Husbands, the day was unforgettable. The nephew of Canadian legend Patrick Husbands notched his first career Grade 1 victory since arriving in the U.S. in late 2024. "At the three-furlong pole, I knew I had a lot of horse. I just tried to be patient," Husbands noted.

By winning the Apple Blossom, Claret Beret earns an automatic "Win and You're In" berth to the Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) at Keeneland this October. While the winner looks ahead to the fall, questions remain for Nitrogen, who has now suffered back-to-back defeats following her recent loss in the Azeri Stakes (G2).
