Claro Oscuro, generous sire at Haras La Tutina, dies at 21

Claro Oscuro, the outstanding stallion who passed away a few days ago at Haras La Tutina at age 21, left behind a legacy as bright on the racetrack as it was in the breeding shed—a space that will be exceptionally hard to fill.

Bred by Haras Vacación and a son of the phenomenal Mutakddim, the bay was brilliant in both arenas. Named Champion Sprinter of his generation, he went on to sire numerous stakes performers despite never having a crop larger than 30 foals.

Carrying the historic silks of Stud Tobetma under the care of the deeply missed trainer Orosmán Toscano, Claro Oscuro won 12 of his 22 starts. He began his career competing between six and seven furlongs, but it was in the shortest sprints where he truly reached his peak.

Naturally, the defining moment of his race career came in 2010 when he captured the Gran Premio Félix de Alzaga Unzué (G1). His resume also features victories in the Clásico General Viamonte (G3), Clásico Asociación Argentina de Fomento Equino (L), Clásico Río de la Plata (L), Clásico Lord At War, Clásico Refinado Tom, and Clásico Gentlemen, along with a win in the Handicap Phoenix. He also ran third in the Handicap Wagram and fourth in the Clásico Coronel Pringles (G3).

Out of Comodora (Confidential Talk), he was a half-brother to Caldine (Roman Ruler), Champion 2- and 3-Year-Old Filly of her crop with top-level triumphs in the Gran Premio Estrellas Juvenile Fillies (G1) and Gran Premio Selección (G1). He belonged to the same star-studded family of Champion Croassant (Confidential Talk), Champion Cheyenne (Pepenador), and G1 winners Chollo (Roy), El Charleta (Missionary), and Cutlas (Confidential Talk).

Claro Oscuro entered stud in 2012 at Haras La Tutina, siring 255 foals to date, of which 99 reached the races and 39 became winners.

Among his best progeny were La Clota, one of the standout juvenile fillies of her generation and winner of both the Clásico Saturnino J. Unzué (G2) and Clásico Venezuela (G2); Clara Danger, who also achieved the Unzué–Venezuela double; and Claro Secreto, winner of the Clásico Eduardo Jara. Across various circuits in the interior of the country, the champion also left an indelible mark as a sire of top match-racers.

Claro Oscuro covered 16 mares during the 2025 breeding season, who will give form to his final crop between now and the end of the year.
