The daughter of Anak Nakal got another nice victory, now taking the Lombardo Handicap

She is not exactly the queen of consistency, but Cleopatra Kal is unstoppable when her tactics work. The Stud Indio Ona's mare, who runs coming from behind, once again struck the blow, winning the Lombardo Handicap, the main event of Wednesday's short card at the San Isidro Racecourse, which was run over 1800 meters on the auxiliary dirt track.
Light in the kilos, as she weighed 53 1/2, Valentin Penna's trainee -the new generation of an illustrious surname- found her second victory in the division with enough room in the closing and with a perfect ride by Kevin Banegas, undoubtedly one of the best jockeys in the country today.
The young professional was patient with the daughter of Anak Nakal while Manicura Rusa (Zensational, 53) went out to mark the way with wide advantages, but under fractions not so fast. Banegas knew that the leading rival would be a tough one, so he only started to look for places in the final part of the turn.
Once on the straight, when she managed to get out of the legs of the great favorite Reina Casada (Long Island Sound, 57), Cleopatra Kal began to grow open and to discount. Noche Plateada (In the Dark, 55) had already dominated Manicura Rusa ahead, when the winner went wide to win by 1 length in 1m48s69/100, finishing off with power.
Reina Casada was third 1 1/2 lenght back, lacked powder, a neck in front of Manicura Rusa, who ran a great race. The performances of Priola (South Kissing, 53 1/2) and Portal Dame (Portal del Alto, 53), who completed the order of finish, were disappointing.
Bred by Haras Vadarkblar, Cleopatra Kal has one of the best pedigrees in recent times for the Crotto family's farm. Cleopatra Spa (Espaciado), her dam, is a full sister to G2W Es Richard and to the stakes winner Es Mujeriego, in a branch that in the last years had another outstanding name in Grillo del Nilo (Engrillado), like the previous ones, another long distance horse.
