Colin Keane aims for a dream weekend with Blue Bolt and Kalpana

The jockey has already captured five G1 victories during the season and will hold two exceptional mounts between Saturday and Sunday: first, he will seek to preserve Blue Bolt’s undefeated 2026 record in the Sun Chariot Stakes (G1) at Newmarket, before traveling to Paris to guide Kalpana in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1)

NEWMARKET, England (Special for Turf Diario).— Five G1 victories might be enough to make any season unforgettable, but Colin Keane enters the first weekend of October with plenty of reasons to believe he can still add significantly to that tally. In a span of just 24 hours, he will hold the reins of Blue Bolt (Blue Point) and Kalpana(Study of Man), two of Europe’s premier mares and central figures in a pair of monumental races.
On Saturday, he will be at Newmarket to partner Blue Bolt in the Sun Chariot Stakes (G1)—a decision that even required passing on the ride aboard heavily favored Sunly (Night of Thunder) at ParisLongchamp. It is not difficult to understand his choice.
The Andrew Balding trainee is undefeated in five starts this season and provided Keane with three of his five G1 wins in 2026. Furthermore, she comes into the Sun Chariot Stakes off what the jockey himself considers the finest performance of her career.
“Blue Bolt has been nothing short of brilliant this year, and you’d have to say her last run in the Matron Stakes was probably the best of her life,” he explained.
Her utter dominance throughout the season makes her a prohibitive favorite at Newmarket, where she will seek to extend her flawless campaign and deliver another major triumph for Keane before the rider sets off for France.
“It’s a massive weekend. I’m incredibly lucky that all these horses have come along at the same time,” Keane admitted. “It really is amazing. On Saturday I ride Blue Bolt in the Sun Chariot Stakes, and then I fly to France to ride in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe with Kalpana, among other mounts. Hopefully, one of them can get the job done.”
From Newmarket to the Arc If Blue Bolt represents an extraordinary opportunity, Sunday’s assignment carries an even grander dimension.
Keane will sit aboard Kalpana in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1), where the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (G1) winner figures as one of the chief threats to Daryz (Sea the Stars), who will be attempting to defend his crown.
The Andrew Balding representative also boasts a trait particularly prized in a race like the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe: her complete versatility regarding running styles.
“Kalpana is exceptionally professional. You can place her anywhere in a race,” Keane highlighted. “She is just as comfortable tracking the leaders as she is coming from off the pace. After that, she simply does the rest.”
That tactical flexibility could prove to be an invaluable weapon in an Arc featuring 16 runners, where early positioning and race flow so often prove decisive.
For Keane, it will also mean the chance to extend an extraordinary season on the grandest stage of all.
