Stewards disqualified Escape Room from first place in the Especial Libreo for interference; while the head-on replay showed only minor contact, the core issue remains that racing official rulings consistently lack a clear standard or uniform criteria
LA PLATA.— The Especial Libreo (1,600 m, fast dirt), the first of two features on Tuesday’s card at the local track, ended with one of the season's most controversial finishes.
At the wire, Escape Room (Il Campione, 58) held the narrowest of margins over Colour Vision (Univisión, 59), following a battle between the two for most of the running.
Following an objection filed by Elías Martínez, rider of the runner-up, against Gonzalo Borda, who was aboard the heavy favorite, the stewards reviewed the race replay and concluded that Escape Room had interfered with Colour Vision, ultimately demoting him to second place.
Naturally, discontent surged immediately, further fueled across social media where opinions varied wildly. While Escape Room did make minor contact with Colour Vision during the stretch drive, it was a scenario seen a thousand times on local tracks, and one where in 998 of those cases, stewards leave the result untouched.
Undoubtedly, the paper-thin margin separating the pair at the finish line served as the deciding factor in the call. Yet the broader issue, beyond this specific case, remains the chronic lack of consistency in how these criteria are applied. It continues to cloud the sport, with no sign of change...
