Compasión shapes as the leading contender for the Clásico Pamplona

In Sunday’s other G1 at Monterrico, the daughter of Southdale aims to secure a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1)

LIMA, Peru (From a special correspondent).- The Gran Premio Latinoamericano (G1) will be the main attraction on Sunday at Hipódromo de Monterrico, but not the only one. Earlier on the card, the Clásico Pamplona (G1-2000m, turf) will provide another major clash, with the added incentive that its winner will earn a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) this October at Keeneland, as the race is part of the Challenge Series – Win and You’re Inprogram.

With 14 confirmed runners, there is the unusual situation that six are trained by Juan Suárez Villarroel, the winningest trainer of all time—but not Compasión, the leading contender. Instead, Carlos Gastañeta handles the daughter of Southdale, who will be seeking her first victory at the top level.

Winner last season of the Clásico Miguel Fort Magot (G3), Clásico Oscar Berckemeyer Pazos (G3), and Clásico Postín (G2), she closed out 2025 with a below-par effort in the Gran Premio Nacional Augusto B. Leguía (G1). On her return, however, she ran a big race—once again against males—in the Clásico Baldomero Aspillaga (G3), a qualifier for the Latinoamericano, finishing just behind Puppi’s Husband (Fortify) and Khamal (Mendelssohn), both key players in the continental feature.

Compasión will have several rivals to watch, including Argentine runner Se Va Colando (Treasure Beach), from the Suárez–Jet Set team, who is on the rise and looking for revenge.

The bay has won three of her last four starts, including the Clásico Mari July (L), with her only defeat in that span coming behind Compasión in the Berckemeyer Pazos, where she finished 3 3/4 lengths back in second.

Domitila (Brodys Cause), stablemate of Se Va Colando, was beaten just a half-head by her in the Mari July and is another serious threat, along with Lola Lola (Singe the Turf), Camilita (Southdale), Suemy (Singe the Turf), and Coldbaby (Liberal), all of whom add depth to a highly competitive field.
