IRPAC approved in Paris the modifications proposed by OSAF for the South American black-type calendar, and the traditional race at El Bosque will drop to G2 status as of January 1. On the flip side, Argentina's Carreras de las Estrellas Dirt will gain Listed status. Brazil accounts for the majority of the remaining changes

The Gran Premio Selección de Potrancas at La Plata will lose its G1 status starting January 1, 2027, dropping to G2level—a decision of significant impact for the Argentine black-type calendar and part of the changes approved by the International Race Planning Advisory Committee (IRPAC).

The decision was made official during the committee meeting held on Saturday, October 3, in this city, chaired by its president, Carl Hamilton, with Horacio Espósito in attendance representing OSAF.

During the session, the modifications previously approved by OSAF's Black-Type Quality Control Committee and Board of Directors were formally presented and addressed.

In total, 6 downgrades, 5 upgrades, and several changes in race conditions and distances were established, all taking effect at the start of the coming season.

For Argentina, the major news revolves around the Selección de Potrancas, one of the signature features for 3-year-old fillies at Hipódromo de La Plata, which will forfeit its G1 standing to become a G2. It will be the only Argentine race to suffer a downgrade during this review.

Brazil accounts for the highest concentration of demotions. At Cidade Jardim, the Grande Prêmio 25 de Janeiro, the Grande Prêmio Presidente do Conselho do Jockey Club, and the Copa dos Campeões will drop from G2 to G3, while the Grande Prêmio Piratininga descends from G3 to Listed status.

The sixth downgrade was handed to Chile, where the Clásico Velocidad, contested at Club Hípico de Santiago, will lose its G3 tag to become a Listed feature.

Carreras de las Estrellas Dirt Upgraded to Listed

It was not all bad news for the Argentine fixture list. The Carreras de las Estrellas Dirt, reserved for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up over 1300 meters—which alternates between San Isidro and Palermo—will receive international black-type status for the first time, jumping from Non-Graded to Listed.

The remaining 4 upgrades belong to Brazil. The Grande Prêmio Ciro Frare and the Grande Prêmio Primavera, both held at Tarumã, will ascend from Listed to G3.

Meanwhile, two other contests move from Non-Graded to Listed: the Copa ABCPCC Éguas Granja Bica de Ouro / Torrealba, for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up over 2000 meters, and the Copa ABCPCC Milha Sylvio Bertoli, for 3-year-olds and up over 1600 meters.

IRPAC additionally ratified several condition adjustments slated to take effect in January.

In Chile, the Copa El Mercurio (L) at Valparaíso Sporting will shift to weight-for-age conditions. Uruguay will see 4 distance modifications: the Gran Premio Maroñas (G3) will now be contested over 1200 meters, while both the Gran Premio Municipal (L) and the Clásico Zelmar Michelini (L) will be fixed at 2000 meters. Lastly, the Gran Premio Manuel Quintela (G3) will stretch out to 2200 meters.

The amendments passed in Paris mark a fresh realigning of the South American racing schedule to match global benchmarks that determine black-type ratings.

For Argentina, the outcome yields movement in opposing directions: the Carreras de las Estrellas Dirt reaches Listedstatus, but La Plata loses one of its G1 pillars with the demotion of the Selección de Potrancas to G2. It is a major shift for a historic fixture in El Bosque, coming into force, alongside all other approved measures, on January 1, 2027.
