The Andreas Wöhler trainee shocked the racing world at Hamburg, delivering an authoritative performance to capture Germany's ultimate classic. The spectacular triumph marked the master conditioner's sixth career victory in the historic race, while simultaneously providing the third Derby triumph for the legendary sire Soldier Hollow

HAMBURG, Germany (Special for Turf Diario).— In one of the biggest upsets in the modern history of the Deutsches Derby (G1), Dardanos left the Hamburg crowd speechless by pulling off a commanding victory in the 157th renewal of the German Classic, returning an astronomical 84/1 dividend.

Representing Stall Bergholz, the colt entered the classic arena on the heels of a modest runner-up finish in the Derby Trial (L) at Dortmund. However, he showcased an unthinkable step forward in form to hand master conditioner Andreas Wöhler his sixth career victory in the centerpiece of the German racing calendar, adding to his previous triumphs with Pik König (Königsstuhl, 1992), Belenus (Lomitas, 1999), Waldpark (Dubawi, 2011), Isfahan (Lord of England, 2016), and Laccario (Scalo, 2019).

Engineered perfectly by jockey Wladimir Panov, who celebrated his first career victory in the German Derby, Dardanos broke sharply from the gates to briefly sit near the vanguard before settling comfortably into fourth as the field took shape. Upon entering the homestretch, Panov made a decisive tactical move by guiding his mount toward the center of the track. The son of Soldier Hollow responded immediately with a sustained, powerful rally, seizing command with 400 meters left to run and drawing away comfortably toward the wire.

At the finish, he maintained a one-length advantage over Chiefland (Study of Man), while Salitos (In Swoop)—both carrying the silks of the prominent Liberty Racing syndicate—completed the trifecta an identical distance back. Kairos (Zarak), another talented member of the powerful Liberty Racing roster, completed the top four.

"He is a very straightforward horse to ride. He does exactly what you ask of him, and I was able to enjoy a textbook trip today. This is an incredibly emotional moment, and I am absolutely thrilled," Panov remarked during the post-race celebrations.

Friedrich von Lenthe, co-owner of the newly crowned classic winner, was equally stunned by the result: "I still cannot believe what just happened. We were hoping to fight for a spot in the top five or six, but winning the Derby is simply incredible."

Reflecting on the performance, Wöhler highlighted the rapid development of his pupil. "We knew he needed his last race and that he would improve, though we never imagined quite how much. Winning the Derby will always be something profoundly special. Furthermore, one of his owners was born right here in Hamburg, which makes this victory mean even more to the team."

The triumph adds another prestigious chapter to the stallion career of the legendary Soldier Hollow, who has now produced three Deutsches Derby winners, following in the footsteps of Pastorius (2012) and Weltstar (2018), while celebrating his seventh individual top-flight Group 1 winner. Dardanos is the best foal out of the Mount Nelson mare Delegation, who had already produced stakes winners Delgardo (Best Solution) and De La Soul (Sea the Moon), once again validating a maternal line that consistently produces elite international champions.
