Deterministic Broke Another Record and Reaffirmed His Leadership Among the Turf Stayers

The son of Liam's Map shone once again at Saratoga, won the Manhattan Stakes (G1) for the second consecutive year, and established a new track record for 1900 meters on the turt
SARATOGA SPRINGS, New York (Special to Turf Diario).– There are horses going through great moments. And then there is Deterministic. The remarkable son of Liam's Map continued building an extraordinary campaign this Saturday at Saratoga by securing his fifth consecutive graded stakes victory and successfully defending his crown in the Manhattan Stakes (G1), one of the most important events on the American turf calendar.
But the success did not arrive just in any manner. The representative of St. Elias Stable, Ken Langone, Steven Duncker, and Vicarage Stable delivered a performance of the highest level, additionally establishing a new track record for 1900 meters over the Saratoga turf course by covering the distance in 1m50s50/100, shattering the previous mark of 1m51s40/100 set by Say the Word (More Than Ready) in 2020.
Ridden once again by Kendrick Carmouche—a perfect partner in this streak as they remain undefeated together—the pupil of Miguel Clement tracked from the start the pace set by Rhetorical (Not This Time), who posted fractions of 22s99/100, 47s01/100, 1m9s83/100, and 1m32s92/100.
Always traveling with immense comfort, Deterministic began to make up ground midway through the far turn and, once in the straight, gradually wore down the pacesetter to take command definitively. However, there was still a tougher challenge remaining: the closing kick of Test Score (Oscar Performance), who was flying down the center of the course.
The winner's response was once again that of a true champion. He found reserves when he needed them most and maintained his advantage to the wire to prevail by a half-length, leaving One Stripe (One World) in third, while Rhetorical had to settle for fourth place.
"He is a horse of superior class," Clement stated, visibly moved. "I always believed he was the best turf horse in the United States and today he proved it again. Maybe I'm biased, but I felt we deserved the Eclipse Award last season. I hope that now everyone understands why I consider him the leader of the division."
The trainer also advanced that the future could find his star competing over slightly shorter distances.
"I think that for his future as a stallion, it might be more attractive to stay around the mile or even drop down a bit in distance. We will analyze it with the owners, but we will surely find the right path," he explained.
For Carmouche, the race unfolded exactly as he had envisioned: "He broke just a bit slowly, but once we settled behind the pacesetter, I felt I had everything under control. At the half-mile pole, he started telling me he wanted to run. When I called on him in the turn, he responded immediately, and entering the final furlong, I knew they wouldn't catch him," the jockey commented.
And he added: "He is a different kind of horse. Quiet in the paddock, relaxed at all times, but when it's time to compete, he transforms. He is pure professionalism."
The victory also carried relevance for his sire, Liam's Map, who now adds his second G1 winner of the season, following the success of Napoleon Solo in the Preakness Stakes (G1). The stallion currently stands at Lane's End with a stud fee of $50,000.
Meanwhile, Deterministic continues to accumulate merits to become one of the great icons of North American turf racing. And judging by what was seen at Saratoga, he still seems to have plenty more to offer.
