The son of Daddy Long Legs completed San Benito’s notable stakes double on the turf at San Isidro

Friday afternoon proved perfect at Hipódromo de San Isidro for the team of Stud-Haras San Benito, led by Andrés Basombrío, with the entire family pushing behind. As if the promising debut win by Don Pacto (Pneumatic) in the Clásico José B. Zubiaurre wasn’t enough, the stable quickly doubled up at a higher level with another victory full of promise.
Stepping up in class after an almost flawless run through allowance company, 3-year-old Don Machete rose to the occasion to land the upset in the Clásico Macon (L-1800m, turf), defeating favorite Vundu (Suggestive Boy) and joining the ranks of key names at the distance on grass.
It’s true his rival was returning from a layoff and conceded weight—53 1/2 kilos for the winner against 60 1/2 for Vundu—but the chestnut son of Daddy Long Legs displayed notable qualities, including composure and a decisive turn of foot in the stretch.
Brian Enrique kept him in third behind Chanclette (Super Saver) and Vundu, who set the pace. Turning for home, the favorite took over and tried to kick clear but lacked his usual sharpness. At that point it became evident he would struggle to hold on, and once asked for his run, Don Machete responded strongly, took command, and drew off to beat Vundu by 1 1/2 lengths at the wire, with the rest well behind. The final time of 1:50.20 was solid over a yielding surface.
A younger half-brother to stakes winner Don Mártir (Il Campione) and G3-placed Doña Magma (Daddy Long Legs), Don Machete sent a clear message that his best is still ahead, with the Gran Premio Estrellas Classic (G1) shaping up as a major target.
