Don Pacto returns in the Ensayo to defend his undefeated record against the more experienced Barto on the turf

A comfortable winner on debut in one of the divisions of the Zubiaurre, he faces a tough opponent in the prep race for the Gran Premio Jockey Club

The path toward the Gran Premio Jockey Club (G1), to be run in October, will take its final major step this afternoon on the turf of Hipódromo de San Isidro. The Clásico Ensayo (G3), over its traditional 1,800 meters, will offer a quality field of colts the ideal opportunity to reach the second leg of the national Triple Crown sharp to the maximum.

Part of an outstanding race card scheduled for this afternoon featuring 3 stakes races, the field of 10 confirmed runners includes several names from whom much is expected.

For instance, back in the starting gate will be Don Pacto (Pneumatic), who has not raced since turning heads on debut to win one of the divisions of the Clásico José B. Zubiaurre, where he produced a powerful late turn of foot to cross the wire 6 lengths clear of Happy Angel (Hi Happy).

Nothing will come easy for the San Benito homebred, especially given the presence of his paternal half-brother Barto, fourth in the Carreras de las Estrellas Juvenile (G1) and, most recently, runner-up just 3/4 of a length behind the talented Colorado del Monte (Strategos) in the Gran Premio Dos Mil Guineas (G1). His seasoning and current form could prove to be a decisive advantage over Don Pacto.

Another contender targeting the top spot is the Brazilian-bred Redemption Song (Outstrip), who made an eye-catching debut with a comfortable victory before finishing below expectations in the aforementioned Guineas, where he crossed the wire fifth, beaten 2 3/4 lengths, right in a line with Hi Pocho (Hi Happy), who also lines up today holding solid claims.

The other unbeaten entrant in the field is Crazy (Treasure Beach), who showed no mercy to maiden-placer Pinko(Forge) when making his debut over the local mile just over a month ago. If he makes the expected step forward, he will surely be right in the thick of the finish.

Along with Barto and Crazy, Giannino (King Guillermo) forms part of the three-pronged entry presented by Roberto Pellegatta for Juan Saldivia. Having broken his maiden in his third start, he now looks to continue his upward trajectory.
