Wednesday racing at San Isidro features a compelling renewal of the Silurian Handicap (1600m, dirt), a test for 4-year-olds and up that marks the long-awaited return of El Epecuén, who hasn’t raced since August of last year.

The Il Campione colt has always shown flashes of high quality, though his biggest challenge has been staying sound rather than overcoming rivals. Winner of the Handicap Snow Cat in mid-2023, he also ran second in the Clásico Perú(G2) and third in the Clásico New Dandy before being sidelined. Now returning under topweight of 60 kilos, expectations remain high—but so is the level of competition.

El Cobra Kai (Cosmic Trigger, 57.5 kg) also comes back from a break, not having raced since finishing off the board in the Gran Premio Palermo (G1) in November. A past winner of the Handicap Hipódromo La Punta and runner-up in the Clásico Jockey Club de la Provincia de Buenos Aires (G2) as a sophomore, he, too, looks to relaunch his career.

El Gazpacho (Bodemeister, 58.5 kg) enters in sharp form, having finished second by a length to Don Rocky (Fortify) in the Clásico Blend (L) last time out. With wins in the Clásico Mesa del Senado (L) and Handicap Whipper In, he looms as a serious contender.

Also dangerous is Treasure Runner (Treasure Beach, 55 kg), who strung together a pair of smart allowance wins before running third in the Handicap Full Sail. If he fires his best shot, he’s capable of a minor upset.

One of the top colts of his generation—and runner-up to none other than El Kodigo (Cosmic Trigger) in the Gran Premio Polla de Potrillos (G1)—Amigazo Sky (Falling Sky, 58.5 kg) turned in a promising effort in his comeback run and now looks poised to steadily regain his former form. If he does, no one should be surprised.
