LA PLATA – Friday’s feature at the Bosque, the Haras La Biznaga Handicap (1400 meters, dirt), shapes up as a fiercely competitive affair, headlining a card that serves as a prelude to the upcoming Gran Premio Dardo Rocha (G1)celebration in just three weeks’ time.

Open to 4-year-olds and up with at least three wins, the race will see El Patio (Il Campione, 59 kilos) start as the leading contender. A proven and consistent campaigner, he comes off a solid runner-up effort, just one length behind Che Vivi(Manipulator), in the Haras Don Arcángel Special.

His main threat could come from Payucano (Mask), the highweight at 60.5 kilos, who ran well in San Isidro when finishing second, six lengths behind Rugiente (Il Campione), the same horse who captured Thursday’s Rubén E. Laitán Handicap at Palermo. A previous winner of the Mangangá Special over this same track, he’s more than capable of imposing himself again.

Bequepingo (Cityscape, 55) didn’t fire in his comeback but has several stakes placings on his résumé, along with a victory in the Simonside Handicap, making him a legitimate threat if he returns to form.

From the rail, Stormy River (Le Blues, 55.5) gets in with a favorable impost and will try to rebound from a subpar effort. Though two of his three wins have come in lesser company, he’s lightly raced and still improving.

Veteran Surfing Boy (Hurricane Cat, 59.5) returns once again at age ten, carrying plenty of experience—and a fair amount of weight. If he finds the right opening in the stretch, the old warrior could well spring a surprise and steal the spotlight once more.
