Emphatic preserved her unbeaten record and delivered a long-awaited first Breeders' Cup victory for trainer Brendan Walsh

The daughter of Nyquist dominated the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at Keeneland and held off a formidable late charge from Miss Monica to score by a length and a half. Following 13 unsuccessful attempts, the Irish-born trainer finally celebrated his maiden victory in the World Championships

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (Special for Turf Diario).— Brendan Walsh had to wait considerably longer than he would have liked, but his moment of glory in the Breeders' Cup finally arrived. The Irish trainer secured his first victory in the World Championships this Friday courtesy of Emphatic, who maintained her unbeaten record in four career starts with a formidable performance in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), contested over 1,700 meters on the dirt at Keeneland for a $2-million purse.
The daughter of Nyquist, racing for Gainesway Stable and Andrew Rosen, appeared headed for a comfortable win when she turned into the home stretch with a multi-length lead. However, she had to dig deep to withstand the powerful late surge of Miss Monica (Early Voting), who had suffered serious bumping at the break before closing to finish second, a length and a half behind.
For Walsh, 53, the victory brought an end to a long drought. He had saddled 13 previous runners in the Breeders' Cup,with his best finish being a third-place effort with Worldly (Matty G) in the 2013 Marathon (G2).
“I'm thrilled. The filly was fantastic, Tyler did an extraordinary job, and my entire team deserves huge credit. We are very lucky,” expressed the trainer.
Emphatic entered the contest riding a three-race winning streak, including a gate-to-wire triumph in the Alcibiades Stakes (G1), also held at Keeneland. This time, Tyler Gaffalione elected to employ a different tactical approach.
The early pace was set by Lexi's Charm (Lexitonian), who intent on the lead under Umberto Rispoli—a late replacement for José Ortiz, who sustained an injury during the fifth race of the card.
The Mark Casse trainee posted blistering fractions of 22.60 and 45.80 seconds, while Emphatic tracked comfortably in second, waiting for the opportune moment to strike.
Navigating the far turn, Gaffalione asked for her supreme effort, and the response was immediate. The filly took command with authority, opened up on her rivals, and turned into the lane with what looked to be an unassailable lead.
“I felt like a winner the entire way. She broke cleanly, found her rhythm right away, and when I asked her to accelerate, she responded spectacularly,” said the jockey.
Yet Miss Monica was still to make her presence felt. The race favorite, trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Flavien Prat, had ducked inward at the break, colliding with Rum Twist (Mandaloun) and dropping back to tenth in the twelve-horse field.
From that position, she launched an extraordinary recovery, surging along the rail and cutting rapidly into the leader's margin in the closing strides.
“It's a shame. With young horses, to win these major races you need everything to go right,” lamented Baffert.
For a few fleeting strides, Miss Monica's late charge seemed to threaten Emphatic's victory, but the leader had saved enough in reserve to preserve her cushion.
“When she opened up, I thought she might tire a little bit, but she didn't. Bob's filly was coming very hard, but we had a significant margin and Emphatic finished up very strong,” Walsh explained.
Miss Monica held second, a massive 8 1/4 lengths clear of Manuka Honey (Upstart), who completed the trifecta under Luis Sáez. Finishing fourth was Domain Expansion (Speaker's Corner), guided by Adrián Escobedo in his first Breeders' Cup appearance.
The final time was 1:42.40, with Emphatic returning $7.32 to win.
Bred in Pennsylvania by Jon A. Marshall, the daughter of Nyquist elevated her career record to four wins in as many starts, confirming her position among the elite fillies of her division.
For Walsh, the result carried significance that extended far beyond the stats. After countless trips, missed opportunities, and frustrations, he found in Emphatic the filly capable of rewriting his destiny.
The undefeated filly captured her second consecutive G1 title and cemented her status as a prime candidate for Champion Two-Year-Old Filly honors. Walsh, at long last, stood in the winner's circle at the Breeders' Cup.
