Estrange captured a brilliant, career-defining first Grade 1 victory

he David O’Meara trainee clearly dominated the prestigious Pretty Polly Stakes at The Curragh to secure the most significant victory of her career, and she now points directly toward the primary objective of her season
COUNTY KILDARE, Ireland— The elusive, top-level breakthrough that had continuously slipped through her grasp finally arrived in spectacular fashion for Estrange (Night of Thunder). The David O’Meara-trained five-year-old mare produced a definitive career-best performance to capture Sunday’s prestigious Tattersalls Pretty Polly Stakes (G1)over 2,000 meters at The Curragh, securing the coveted first Grade 1 victory of her racing career.
While the pre-race spotlight was intensely focused on recent Epsom Oaks (G1) heroine Thundering On (Frankel),Estrange carried plenty of live support into the classic fixture and validated that confidence completely. Ridden with immense patience by regular pilot Danny Tudhope, who allowed the mare to settle comfortably at the tail of the field,the talented daughter of Night of Thunder began making continuous headway with striking fluidity inside the final three furlongs. When formally asked for her ultimate effort, she displayed a devastating turn of foot to easily clear the field in the lane.
In the final yards, she left an incredibly game One Look (Gleneagles) without answers, crossing the wire with an authoritative 1 1/2-length advantage. Meanwhile, the heavy post-time favorite Thundering On completely failed to quicken when the real running began, yielding without a distinct response to finish a disappointing fourth.
For O’Meara, a native of County Cork, the victory carried immense personal significance as it marked his first lifetime Grade 1 triumph on Irish soil. "She is just an extraordinary mare," the trainer remarked post-race. "She might have traveled a bit wide during the journey, but Danny always looked to be in absolute control. We knew that conceding 12 pounds to a brilliant Oaks winner could heavily complicate the final furlong, but cutting back to this distance was clearly the correct decision. In hindsight, it was likely the defining move that made all the difference today."
The milestone victory also provided a tremendous celebration for the prominent Cheveley Park Stud operation, who owns the homebred mare and stands as one of Europe’s premier breeding empires. "I am absolutely delighted for the entire team at Cheveley Park. They have entrusted horses to my care for over a decade, and to reward that long-standing loyalty with a brilliant Grade 1 trophy is truly fantastic," O’Meara added.
The explosive performance immediately ignited championship expectations for the autumn fixtures. Leading European bookmakers wasted no time in slashing her future book odds for the historic Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) at Longchamp, dropping her price significantly from 20-to-1 down to 12-to-1, while she also emerged as a leading market favorite for the upcoming Nassau Stakes (G1) at Goodwood.
"We would absolutely love to target the Arc, and she is already fully nominated for the race. Securing that elusive Grade 1 victory was the primary objective, and she did it in a completely dominant fashion. We will thoroughly enjoy this achievement first before sitting down to map out the next logical stepping stone," O’Meara concluded.
Tudhope acknowledged that the demanding weight concession to Thundering On remained the stable's primary anxiety ahead of the race, though he never wavered in his assessment of his mount's raw ability.
"We were fully confident that returning to the 2,000-meter trip would play directly to her strengths. We always believed that if she was going to secure that elusive Group 1 title, this was the absolute perfect spot for her. She possesses an immense amount of natural speed, which she displays routinely in her morning works. She relaxed beautifully for me today, found a tremendous rhythm, and when I pulled the trigger, she responded with absolute brilliance," the winning jockey noted.
