In the second leg of his South American farewell tour, the legendary rider guided Soy Poronguero to victory

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (Special to Turf Diario).- He knows it; he feels it. The final chapter of Lanfranco “Frankie” Dettori’s storied career moved one step closer to its conclusion Tuesday at Hipódromo Nacional de Maroñas. As the star attraction of the G1 Gran Premio José Pedro Ramírez international festival, the legendary rider proved once again why his presence remains a global phenomenon.

While one final performance remains—scheduled for Feb. 1 at Hipódromo da Gávea in Rio de Janeiro—Dettori was visibly moved by the reception in Uruguay. “Perhaps I’m realizing that it will all be over soon,” he remarked when asked about his emotional celebration after guiding Soy Poronguero (c, 3, Can the Man—[Dam], by [BMS]) to a gate-to-wire victory in the Premio Sofitel Montevideo Casino Carrasco & Spa.

In a twist of fate, the Stud Lato’s representative (bred in Brazil by Haras Fronteira P.A.P.) carried the number 7 saddle cloth in the day’s seventh race. Seven has long been Dettori’s lucky number; notably, he also scored at San Isidro last month aboard Grand Candyman while carrying the same number.

Dettori’s week in Maroñas was a masterclass in showmanship. From his initial press conference during the post-position draw to his final ride, the Italian ace embraced the spotlight. During Monday’s morning works, he was swarmed by fans seeking to document the historic visit. “I’ve never taken so many photos in my life,” Dettori joked, maintaining his trademark smile throughout the relentless media requirements.

The festivities included a jersey presentation by Uruguayan football icon Diego Godín—featuring the number 7, naturally—and a special ceremony where Dettori joined fellow legends Joao Moreira and Jorge Ricardo to present diplomas to the graduates of the local apprentice school.

The international resonance of the Ramírez festival, bolstered by Dettori's appearance and a sophisticated social media campaign by Maroñas, reached heights rarely seen in the region. It was an unforgettable afternoon for Uruguayan racing and a fitting penultimate stop for Dettori’s South American goodbye.
