Although Monday’s conditional card at Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo may not be the strongest overall, it promises quality stakes action with the British Empire Handicap (1200m, dirt) and Laramie Trail Handicap (1000m, dirt) providing the day’s main attractions. The British Empire is open to horses four years old and up, while the Laramie Trail is restricted to winners aged five and older.

The British Empire field is deep, with nearly as many contenders as entries. Carrying top weight of 61 kilos and seeking his 15th career win, the Pampeano star Despacito (Sabayón) returns looking to replicate his recent triumph in the Handicap Aniversario de la Inauguración del Hipódromo Argentino. In that race, he bested Burgess Shale (Safety Check, 58.5 kg) by 1 ½ lengths, who figures again as a dangerous rival.

Rugiente (Il Campione, 58.5 kg) knows the formula to defeat those two and won’t be a surprise if he pulls it off. Likewise, Mr Neil (Valid Stripes, 56 kg), who defeated them in the Handicap Intérprete by three-quarters of a length over Hop On (Endorsement, 56 kg), is another serious threat.

The filly Soy Yarquén (Seize, 53 kg) will receive favorable weight allowances and could spring a surprise, while Amigazo Sky (Falling Sky, 57.5 kg) returns from a 243-day layoff, boasting a golden maiden victory as a juvenile.

Later in the evening, the Laramie Trail Handicap will showcase another strong cast, including several notable classic winners. Filoso Class (Filoso Emperor) will carry top weight of 63 kilos, 1.5 kilos more than Gonna Fly Now (Key Deputy), who arrives off two straight wins in the division.

Grade stakes winner Kiriel (Catcher In the Rye, 57 kg) looks poised for a big performance, while Maranelo (Holy Boss, 59 kg), Príncipe Soñado (Fragotero, 61 kg), León Americano (Zensational, 58 kg), and Galán de Moda (Qué Vida Buena, 56.5 kg) also figure prominently among the leading contenders for top honors.
