Explora Drops in Distance, Seeking an Elusive G1 Victory in the Test Stakes

The Bob Baffert trainee will lead a high-quality field in Saratoga's traditional sprint for 3-year-old fillies, aiming to prove her class against several rising contenders

SARATOGA SPRINGS, New York.— Although she built a significant portion of her career competing around two turns, Explora will return to the trip where she perhaps displayed her most explosive performance when she tackles Friday's Test Stakes (G1), one of the premier events for 3-year-old sprinting fillies at the Saratoga meeting.

Carrying colors for Michael Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman and trained by Bob Baffert, she arrives with over $1.2 million in earnings and a resumé that features victories in the Oak Leaf Stakes (G2) and Honeybee Stakes(G3), in addition to a commendable fourth-place finish in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) and a recent triumph in the Leslie's Lady Stakes (L), where she posted the highest Beyer Speed Figure of her career (91).

Baffert has never hidden his high regard for the daughter of Blame, convinced that she can deliver at top level both sprinting and over longer distances.

"I think she can do both. All we are looking for is to get that Grade 1 on her record. She has so much talent, and I think seven furlongs will suit her very well," explained the trainer, who previously captured this race with Indian Blessing(Indian Charlie), Contested (Ghostzapper), and the extraordinary Gamine (Into Mischief).

The field, however, offers plenty of credentials to make her task demanding. One of the sharpest rising stars is Where Luck Lives, undefeated this year for Brian Lynch following two runaway wins at Churchill Downs and Keeneland. The daughter of Nyquist, a half-sister to champion Vahva (Gun Runner), will make her stakes debut after dazzling with an 87 Beyer Speed Figure in her latest start.

Also returning to the fray is On Time Girl, a multiple stakes winner for Brad Cox who finished second to Explora in the Leslie's Lady. The daughter of Not This Time has already scored this year in the Forward Gal Stakes (G3) and Eight Belles Stakes (G2), and now seeks her maiden Grade 1 triumph. "She is a very consistent filly and deserves this shot," summarized Cox.

Another contender generating buzz is Movie Night (Speightstown), trained by Will Walden, who enters off two dominant victories at Churchill Downs boasting the highest Beyer in the lineup (96). Her trainer maintains he always viewed her as one of the best 2-year-olds in his barn and believes seven furlongs will be ideal to unleash her late charge.

Meanwhile, Goodall (Yaupon), from the powerful barn of Steven Asmussen, will aim to rebound from her recent defeat to Sippin Pretty (Yaupon) in the Victory Ride Stakes (G3), a contest where she led until the final strides before getting caught. Asmussen notes that track conditions could prove decisive for her chances.

Sippin Pretty enters riding high on confidence following that resounding 26-1 upset win, while Percy's Bar (Upstart), winner of the Ashland Stakes (G1), will look to rediscover her best form by cutting back to a sprint after several outings over longer distances.

With a blend of rapidly improving fillies and proven high-class performers, the Test Stakes promises to deliver one of the standout spectacles of the Saratoga weekend. For Explora, it represents the opportunity to validate the versatility championed by Baffert; for her rivals, a chance to land their first Grade 1 victory in a landmark event that historically crown the elite sprinters of the generation.
