If there was any doubt about the tremendous potential of Explora, it was completely cleared away this Saturday. representing Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman, the filly delivered a class exhibition in the Test Stakes(G1—1,400 m, US$ 500,000) and, with a dominant five-length victory, confirmed she will be one of the major contenders when the time comes for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1).
the emphatic performance also held special meaning for Bob Baffert, who celebrated another G1 victory alongside his inseparable owners, known throughout the industry as "The Three Amigos"—a partnership that has spent decades racking up top-level success on North American tracks.
"I'm just so grateful Mike made the trip out here. It's tough to get him to travel, so I'm really glad he was here. They're my best friends, and winning for them always feels different. We talk practically every day. They love this sport and they know how to handle the ups and downs," said the trainer, visibly moved.
runner-up in last season's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), Explora earned the first G1 win of her career, further elevating a record that now boasts six victories from ten starts.
"She was phenomenal. She has so much class, and getting this G1 was huge for her. The team I have at Churchill Downs did an incredible job preparing her to enter this race in peak condition," added Baffert.
it hadn't all been smooth sailing this year. back in May, the daughter of Blame tried to claim the Kentucky Oaks (G1), but after setting the pace for much of the trip, she faded late to finish fourth.
that setback proved to be a turning point: "After the Oaks, Flavien Prat told me: 'Keep her to one-turn races.'"
the advice was taken to heart. the Test Stakes became the main summer target, and Explora arrived at Saratoga on the heels of a convincing win in the Leslie's Lady Stakes (L) at Churchill Downs.
prior to the break, there was a brief moment of anxiety. on a stifling hot day, the filly appeared washed out and restless in the paddock. "She was getting a bit hot and bothered, but fortunately we cooled her down with water and she settled back down. I told Prat we didn't need to warm her up on the track. She was warm enough, so I asked him to head straight to the gates," explained the hall of fame trainer.
Prat allowed Movie Night (Speightstown) to dictate the pace while Explora stalked from third, traveling comfortably throughout. approaching the turn, the favorite made her move on the outside, seized control with effortless grace, and as soon as she straightened for home, exploded away from her rivals with a devastating turn of foot.
without ever being asked for full extension, she crossed the wire 5 lengths clear, stopping the clock in 1m22s42/100 for the seven furlongs. well beaten in second was Percy's Bar (Upstart), who rallied from off the pace to take second, with Goodall (Yaupon) completing the trifecta in third.
a $350,000 purchase at the 2025 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic two-year-olds in training sale, Explora has now amassed $1,534,415 in earnings, continuing to more than justify that investment.
