Happy endings are not the rule, but in Filippiada’s case, her track career concluded in the best possible way. In her final start, the grey mare captured the Handicap Laguna Blanca (1,400 m, fast dirt), the feature event on Monday at Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo.
The daughter of Il Mercato was acquired in recent hours by Haras Parque Patricios, bidding farewell to the stable routine to begin her life in the tranquility of the farm. Following a brief period of acclimatization, she will be covered by Miriñaque (Hurricane Cat), the star belonging to Alberto Ibañez who stands at the nursery.
Filippiada was a quality mare who ranked among the top 3-year-olds of her generation and rarely disappointed. The numbers offer the clearest evidence: across 24 lifetime starts, she recorded 6 victories and missed the top five only twice, accumulating nearly 66 million pesos in purse earnings.
Carrying a demanding topweight of 59 1/2 kilograms, the La Familia Ingalls colorbearer—trained by Ricardo Scialchi, her owner until yesterday—controlled the pace from the start, with jockey Gustavo Calvente masterfully managing the fractions. Her finest moment came in the stretch, where she maintained a resolute stride to cross the wire 2 lengths ahead of Endeia (Idolo Porteño, 53 kg), while Foto Oscura (Bodemeister) turned in an impressive return to top-tier company to finish third, another 2 lengths behind. The winning time for the race was 1:11.58.
Curiously, favorite Victoria Bayern (Santillano, 61 kg) was nowhere to be found when it mattered, managing only an eighth-place finish in one of the poorest efforts of her remarkably consistent campaign. At 6 years old, such a performance will likely prompt her connections to deliberate whether to keep her in training or retire her to the broodmare band.
There are no such doubts regarding Filippiada, winner of the Clásico Manuel J. Güiraldes (G3) a couple of seasons ago, who now heads to Haras Parque Patricios to embark on a new chapter, with high expectations that she will prove just as successful as a producer as she was as a competitor.
