Zedan Racing Secures Record-Breaking $10.5M Flightline Colt in Ocala Frenzy

OCALA, Florida (Special).- The scene was as electric as it was unforgettable. The moment Flightline appeared in the pedigree of Hip 1056, the atmosphere inside the ring at the OBS Spring 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale shifted dramatically. What followed was history in the making.
The hammer fell at $10.5 million, with Donato Lanni prevailing after a fierce bidding duel on behalf of Zedan Racing Stable, shattering the previous record for a 2-year-old in training at Ocala. Never before had a juvenile commanded such a price at OBS.
Beyond setting a new benchmark for the sale, the colt also became the second-most expensive 2-year-old ever sold in the United States.
“Bob loved him from the start,” Lanni said, referring to Bob Baffert. “And Amr Zedan… he’s very hard to beat in a bidding war. He’s passionate, he loves the game, and that’s great for the industry.”
The enthusiasm was well founded. The colt had delivered a jaw-dropping performance at the under-tack show, covering an eighth of a mile in :9 3/5—one of the most eye-catching works of the entire sale.
“When he breezed, everyone came to the rail to watch him. And he backed it up,” Lanni added. “Bob said the only horse he reminded him of was Unbridled’s Song, when he saw him at a similar sale.”
Bred in Kentucky by Edward and Beverly Seltzer in partnership with W.S. Farish, the colt is by the 2022 Horse of the Year and Lane’s End stallion Flightline, out of Lucrezia (Into Mischief), a stakes winner and graded-placed mare. He had previously been purchased as a weanling for $575,000 at Keeneland.
“Flightline is one of the best horses of all time. And this one is out of an Into Mischief mare… he looks fast, but also like he’ll carry it,” Lanni explained.
Behind the consignor’s banner, Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds once again made headlines. Earlier in the week they sold a filly by Jackie’s Warrior for $2.3 million, and now they add the all-time OBS record to their résumé.
“He’s an incredible horse. You don’t see many like him at these sales,” said Randy Hartley. “Just being around him for a few seconds, you can tell he’s something different.”
The result also underscores the booming market for juveniles in training and the immediate impact of Flightline’s first crop, which is already generating massive demand.
In a week filled with strong numbers and rising indicators, Hip 1056 took everything to another level. This wasn’t just a sale—it was a statement about the market… and the future.
