The defender of Stud Ex Libris took the Handicap Haras Don Florentino after battling her main rival all through the homestretch; a fine ride by apprentice Leo Acuña provided another celebration for trainer Guillermo Frenkel Santillán

LA PLATA, Argentina (Special for Turf Diario).— Cancha Rayada (Strategos, 56 kg) had the entire homestretch to try to pass Franta (57 kg). The defender of Stud Ex Libris was joined side-by-side as soon as she left Luna Gitana(Le Blues, 56 1/2 kg) behind, battling for victory down to the very last stride and ultimately falling short by just a nose. The Handicap Haras Don Florentino, contested over 1400 meters on the dirt, saw the two public favorites deliver a magnificent duel as the feature of Tuesday's card at Hipódromo de La Plata.

Franta ground out a victory that demanded every bit of her courage as well as sharp decision-making from jockey Leo Acuña. The apprentice made a crucial move before the battle even reached its peak, finding room to shift off the inside rail and launch his attack on the leader. Then, with her challenger bearing down, he urged his mount forward to preserve a microscopic margin and deliver another victory for trainer Guillermo Frenkel Santillán, whose barn continues its strong run.

The race shape had initially unfolded to suit the winner. Luna Gitana set out to dictate the terms while Franta settled in second along the rail, tracking close to the pace without having to endure the effort of leading. From that position, she followed the leader until the turn, when Acuña decided it was time to make his move.

He angled her out into the second path and set her in motion. Franta responded promptly, ranged up alongside Luna Gitana, and put her away before reaching the stretch. That maneuver allowed her to hit the straight with clear running, though taking the initiative early brought no moment of relief: Cancha Rayada was already launching her run to challenge.

From there, a whole new contest began. With the early leader beaten, the two top betting choices lined up side-by-side and held the spotlight. Cancha Rayada threw everything into her attack; Franta refused to yield. The finish wire was still distant, and every stride offered a chance for the advantage to shift.

Yet the chestnut mare held her ground. She answered every bid from her persistent rival, who pressed her relentless challenge down the lane. She could never draw away nor put the race to bed early: she had to fight all the way to the wire to preserve the nose margin that separated them at the post.

The defeat left Cancha Rayada a heartbeat short of her goal, though earning full credit for her part in a memorable spectacle. Together, they validated the public's confidence and gave the handicap a finish that will be remembered for far more than just its tight margin.

Bred by Haras Gran Muñeca, this was the fifth win in 18 starts for the 5-year-old Franta, bringing her career earnings to nearly 28 million pesos. This time, the bankroll was boosted by a display of pure determination: she had made her winning move to take the lead, and still found the stamina to defend it through the entire stretch.

Equal credit belonged to Acuña's ride, timing his shift to the outer lane perfectly to give his mount the running room she required. That decision proved decisive in a contest settled by so little, where every detail mattered.

Frenkel Santillán celebrated once again, this time with a victory earned the hard way. Franta supplied the grit, Cancha Rayada forced her to display it, and Tuesday's program at La Plata produced a finish worth watching more than once.
