The Argentine runner, winner of the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1), has received an invitation to compete at Gulfstream Par, but his trainer John Sadler could instead opt to keep him closer to home and target the San Pasqual Stakes at Santa Anita Park

The January calendar is beginning to take shape for Argentine star Full Serrano, and with it comes growing anticipation around a potential Argentine presence on one of the most coveted stages in international racing. The son of Full Mast, who received an invitation this Wednesday to contest the Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) later this month at Gulfstream Park, sent out encouraging signals on the morning of Dec. 29, when he worked at Santa Anita Park, covering 1,000 meters in 1:02 1/5, a solid move that confirmed his well-being and opened the door to multiple possibilities for his next assignment.
Trainer John Sadler was cautious but transparent when assessing the immediate outlook. “He needs a little more training, but it’s possible we’ll look at the San Pasqual,” he said, referring to the San Pasqual Stakes (G2) on Jan. 31 over 1,800 meters at Santa Anita, the same track where Full Serrano posted his latest breeze.
The measured tone of that statement was enough to underline that Full Serrano remains very much in play, with his connections carefully weighing timing, rivals, and race conditions before committing to a final path.
The Pegasus World Cup (G1)—run over 1,800 meters for 4-year-olds and up and carrying a purse of US$3 million—once again looms as the early-season centerpiece on the U.S. calendar. The list of invitees is remarkably deep, and its very composition illustrates the level of challenge involved. Defending champion White Abarrio (Race Day), winner of the 2025 edition and a multiple G1 scorer, heads the roster, while trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. is also represented by Skippylongstocking (Exaggerator), the recent winner of the Harlan’s Holiday (G3) and a model of consistency.
Hall of Famer Bob Baffert appears among the invitees with Goal Oriented (Not This Time), the fresh winner of the Malibu Stakes (G1), while Brad Cox fields a formidable trio in Tappan Street (Into Mischief), the Florida Derby (G1) hero coming off a winning comeback; Disco Time (Not This Time), unbeaten and the Lecomte (G3) winner; and Bishops Bay (Uncle Mo), who has strung together victories in the Forty Niner (G3) and the Cigar Mile (G2). They are joined by Captain Cook (Practical Joke), Rattle N Roll (Connect), Chunk of Gold (Preservationist), Poster(Munnings), and the battle-hardened veteran Touchuponastar (Star Guitar).
Within that constellation of established stars and rising talents, Full Serrano holds his own place. The winner of the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) in 2024, he arrives with the credentials of a horse who has already triumphed on racing’s biggest stage, and with the lingering sense that his fifth-place finish in the 2025 Breeders’ Cup—after a very troubled trip—did not reflect his true ability. His subsequent preparation has been geared toward restoring freshness and balance, a process seemingly validated by his latest Santa Anita work.
The San Pasqual (G2) thus shapes up as a logical, strategic alternative: a demanding race at an intermediate distance, well-suited to taking the measure of where he stands while building toward bigger objectives from a strong California base. Sadler and his team understand that, at this stage, managing effort can be just as critical as ambition. The Pegasus, however, remains very much on the table.
With international credentials, an encouraging worktab, and an open slate of options, Full Serrano is entering a decisive stretch. Pegasus or San Pasqual—January will provide the answer. For now, the Argentine is poised to return to center stage and once again place South America firmly in the global racing spotlight.
