Full Serrano, the sole South American hope, aims for another epic feat in the Breeders' Cup

The Argentine colt will contest the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) for the third consecutive year, seeking to replicate his unforgettable 2024 triumph. Following the scratch of the Chilean mare Eccentric, he stands as South America's lone representative at Keeneland, locking horns with form horses like Further Ado and Forged Steel

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (From a special correspondent).— Two years after penning one of the most glorious chapters in Argentine racing history at the Breeders' Cup, Full Serrano returns to the international spotlight with dreams of repeating that monumental triumph. The Argentine-bred stallion will line up this Saturday for his third consecutive appearance in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) over 1,600 meters on the Keeneland main track for a $1-million purse.
His presence carries extraordinary significance. Following the withdrawal of Chilean mare Eccentric (Ivan Denisovich), who had been pointed toward the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1), Full Serrano stands as the sole South American representative across the entire World Championships meeting.
Conditioned by John Sadler, he will attempt to reclaim the crown he captured in 2024, when he stunned the racing world at Del Mar at 13-1 odds to seal an unforgettable victory for Argentine bloodstock.
He returned for the same contest in 2025, finishing fifth. Now, in his third attempt, he arrives on the back of a meticulously engineered preparation designed to bring him to his peak on the big day.
The current campaign presented several hurdles for the Sadler barn, forcing tactical adjustments along the way.
“It was a tough-luck year. Every time we needed to give him a little extra time, it seemed to happen at the most inconvenient moment,” the trainer explained.
The initial target was the San Diego Handicap (G2) at Del Mar, but a minor setback ruled him out. Adapting to the situation, Sadler routed him directly into the 2,000-meter Pacific Classic (G1), where Full Serrano turned in a courageous third after engaging in a grueling early battle for the lead with Knightsbridge (Nyquist).
“He ran with incredible heart. We were very pleased with his performance. We knew we couldn't get past the winner that day, but he put in a massive effort,” he recalled.
That grueling stamina test proved decisive in charting his path to Keeneland. Rather than running in the Goodwood Stakes (G1), Sadler elected to freshen him and train him straight into the Breeders' Cup, mirroring the exact blueprint that yielded victory in 2024.
“To ensure he arrived in absolute peak condition, we decided to bypass the Goodwood and train him up to this race. It's identical to what we did the year he won,” he noted.
The challenge ahead, however, remains formidable. The Dirt Mile features a large field stacked with abundant early speed capable of driving a blistering tempo from the break.
Looming large among them is Further Ado (Gun Runner), trained by Brad Cox, who transitioned from a candidate for the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) to become one of the premier contenders in this field.
The Spendthrift Farm runner boasts an astonishing record at Keeneland: he broke his maiden at the Lexington venue by 20 lengths before returning to capture the Blue Grass Stakes (G1) by 11, a jaw-dropping display that saw him sent off as the favorite for the Kentucky Derby (G1), where he ultimately finished eleventh.
“We love the fact that he has performed so brilliantly over this track, though we certainly don't expect him to win by those kinds of margins again,” Cox commented. Further Ado will break from post 1 under Flavien Prat.
Another heavyweight rival is Forged Steel (Vekoma), winner of both the Goodwood Stakes (G1) and the Hollywood Gold Cup (G2), who also possesses the speed to press the pace.
The dangerous lineup further includes T Kraft (Connect), winner of the Vosburgh Stakes (G3); Iron Man Cal(Collected); and Chunk of Gold (Preservationist), who enters on the heels of three consecutive runner-up finishes and has shown marked improvement since adding blinkers.
The front-running dynamic could set up a demanding pace, a factor that Full Serrano's connections must carefully navigate.
Among those positioned to capitalize on a contested lead is Coal Battle (Coal Front), coming off a narrow head loss in the Ack Ack Stakes (G3).
For Full Serrano, the key will lie in recapturing that rare combination of speed, stamina, and heart that carried him to glory two seasons ago. His third straight tilt in the Dirt Mile represents far more than just another international start.
He is the lone South American-bred horse competing in the 2026 Breeders' Cup, carrying the pride and hopes of an entire region.
And while Further Ado holds pre-race favoritism, the Argentine champ has already proven he knows how to defy the odds.
In 2024, he arrived as an overlooked longshot and left as a world champion. Two years later, Full Serrano steps into the arena once more, looking to raise the Argentine flag high atop the racing world once again.
