The Brad Cox trainee arrives on the upswing and with an ideal profile for the 1,800 meters, in another key race on the road to the Kentucky Derby (G1)

FLORENCE, Kentucky (Special to Turf Diario)—The road to the Kentucky Derby (G1) adds a new high-voltage stop this Saturday with the running of the Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3-1,800 m, synthetic track) at Turfway Park, and there, a name that demands attention with solid arguments appears: Fulleffort.
Representing St. Elias Stable and Starlight Racing, the son of Liam's Map has been a constant protagonist within the track's stakes series for 3-year-olds, although he still lacks the definitive blow. Second in the Leonatus Stakes (L) and then runner-up again in the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes (L), always with a powerful final charge, he left the feeling that his moment is near. And it could be now.
The jump to 1,800 meters appears as a key factor for a horse that has made his late rally his main weapon. Without the presence of Street Beast (Street Sense) or Great White (Volatile), who defeated him in his previous outings, the stage opens up for Fulleffort to finally deliver.
Brad Cox, his trainer, already knows what it is to win this race with a similar profile: in 2025 he achieved it with Final Gambit (Not This Time), also a closer who later finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby. And Cox himself did not hesitate to point out that Fulleffort, at this stage, arrives with an even more solid foundation. "I think the distance is going to help him. He’s a horse that’s going to be better at a mile and an eighth or further," explained the trainer, convinced that the pace can play in his favor.
The challenge will not be easy. A field of 12 participants, with several familiar names, will shape an open competition, where many arrive from performances on turf or Tapeta, leaving questions ahead of an eventual jump to the Churchill Downs dirt.
Among the most dangerous rivals is Stark Contrast (Caravaggio), a G3 winner who measured himself against the European elite in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T), and who will now attempt to extend his performance to longer distances.
Also present will be names like Maximus Prime (Maximus Mischief), Baytown Dreamer (Mendelssohn), and Two Out Hero (War Front)—already known to Fulleffort—along with other aspirants such as Turf Star (Caravaggio), Medici (Into Mischief), Chaos Agent (Independence Hall), and Brave Force (Gun Runner).
Special mention goes to Stop the Car (Maximum Security), the only one in the field coming off a dirt competition, a significant detail in a test where qualifying points (100-50-25-15-10) can define access to the Kentucky Derby.
The Jeff Ruby Steaks not only offers a purse of US$ 777,000, but it usually marks the destiny of several colts on the route to Churchill Downs. Traditionally, its top two finishers secure enough points to guarantee a spot in the Derbystarting gate.
For Fulleffort, the equation is clear: he has already shown talent, consistency, and a fearsome late run. Now he needs to confirm all of that with a victory.
Because at this stage of the calendar, it is no longer enough just to show promise.
