Sidelined since the 2024 G1 Carlos Pellegrini, the two-time G1 winner will face five rivals; the Clasico Aníbal Etchart, held over the straight turf, is the day’s other stakes feature

The year is gaining momentum, and for this Saturday at Hipódromo de San Isidro, several interesting races are scheduled, including the Clasico Botafogo (G3-2000m, turf)and the Clasico Aníbal D. Etchart (1000m, turf), as part of a 14-race program beginning at 2:00 p.m.

A steppingstone to the Gran Premio Miguel A. Martínez de Hoz, the first G1 of the national season—and one that will surely serve as a reference for the Jockey Club Argentino to nominate its representative for the Gran Premio Latinoamericano (G1) in late April at Monterrico, Peru—the race features a low purse of 12,000,000 pesos and just six runners in the gates.

Slotted as the ninth race, around 5:30 p.m., it will mark the return to action after a very long layoff for Jazz Seiver, who, at age 6, will attempt to show why he was once among the leaders of the turf staying division.

The Stud Las Monjitas colorbearer has not competed in 392 days, specifically since finishing tenth in the 2024 Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini (G1), 10 1/4 lengths behind Intense for Me (Fortify) and El Kodigo (Equal Stripes).

A winner at age 2 of the Gran Premio 2000 Guineas (G1) and also the Gran Premio de Honor (G1), prior to that last effort, the son of Super Saver had finished second to El Kodigo by 1 1/2 lengths in the Gran Premio Copa de Oro (G1), ahead of Intense for Me, Mezzopiano (Daddy Long Legs), and G1 winner Epityrum (Portal del Alto), among others.

Such a resume invites a close inspection of Jazz Seiver’s warm-up and suggests that, if he is at his best, defeating him will be a difficult task for his opponents.

Crossing his path is the progressive Joako (Heliostatic), who, after securing a pair of allowance wins, ran brilliantly in the Clásico Tresiete (L), finishing second by 2 lengths to the now-absent Forgging (Forge).

In that same race, the dependable Chelato (Cosmic Trigger) finished fourth by a head and a half-head; he will also be in the lineup, having previously prevailed over Out of the Blue (Drosselmeyer) in the Handicap Juan Esteban Bianchi.

Pecado Original (Global Hunter) did not fare well in his return, but it should be remembered that he managed a second-place finish, 1 1/2 lengths behind Honest Boy (Heliostatic), in the Gran Premio 25 de Mayo (G1), ahead of Knows All (Le Blues) and Acento Final (Treasure Beach), among others. One must overlook that last comeback effort and expect him to improve significantly now.

Orpen Again (Seek Again), with two consecutive wins, and Dragonet (Treasure Beach), a front-runner who has been struggling to hold on, round out the field.

A short while later, completing the stakes double, comes the Clásico Aníbal D. Etchart, contested over 1000 meters on the turf for fillies 3 years old and up, under a set-weight scale.

It is almost mandatory to follow the line of the Clásico Potri Pe, where Pretoriana (Daniel Boone, 55kg) defeated Vieja Amiga Mask (Mask, 58 1/2kg) by a head, with Portuaria Lure (Puerto Escondido, 56kg) finishing fourth as the heavy favorite. The weights change for this occasion, but it appears the race will be decided between them.

Naimabad (Il Campione, 55 1/2kg), a sister to Nanda Dea (Fortify) and Nanabush (Il Campione), arrives in good form from the allowance ranks, as does the filly Gata Frank (Gidu, 54kg), both looking to continue their upward trajectory.
