As happens every time Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo stages races specifically designed for horses campaigning in Argentina’s provincial circuits, the atmosphere around the grandstand felt livelier than usual Monday.

Families, friends, and entire connections gathered behind the same dream: taking a winner’s photo at the cathedral of Argentine racing.

That goal ultimately became reality for Gouverneur Emerit and Chuck Spring, winners of the Especial Juan G. Ublich (1400m, dirt) and the Especial Antonio F. Manzone (1000m, dirt), respectively—both races honoring distinguished racing professionals.

The first of them, Gouverneur Emerit, improved markedly from his official debut, in which he had finished fourth, to score a narrow victory over Pacífico del Sur (Isotérico), who once again came painfully close to a major success on the central circuit.

Carrying the colors of Stud De Galera and guided with precision by Marcelo Quinteros, Gouverneur Emerit advanced steadily throughout while remaining pinned to the rail, never wasting a single inch of ground. In fact, his rider’s determination not to give away any advantage nearly led to traffic trouble.

But the opening finally appeared, the gray colt surged through, took command, and went on to defeat Pacífico del Sur by half a length, while Pacto de Silencio (Silentio) finished another half-length back in third after a final time of 1:25.22.

The colt was bred by Haras Firmamento and is trained by Nicolás D. Palacios.

A short while later, over the straight course, Chuck Spring delivered the ideal official debut, making his prior experience at the smaller tracks of Azul and Tandil fully count.

Always traveling strongly near the pace, the representative of Stud La Californiana began to assert himself from the 300-meter mark and ultimately held off the late challenge of Sirak (Candy Strong) by 1 1/2 lengths without major difficulty.

Another 1 1/2 lengths behind, Sur y Después (Springdom) finished third after having battled the winner early on.

Bred by Haras La Catedral de Palermo, trained by Alfredo Cabrera, and ridden by the efficient Elías D. Martínez, the son of Chuck Berry and Simnisola (Sebi Halo) stopped the clock in a sharp 56.95 seconds.
