Jorge Brunasco's eyes were filled with tears. The unexpected—for most—triumph of his filly Gran Gotera in the Gran Premio Jorge de Atucha (G1-1500 m, dirt) caught him at a very particular moment in his relationship with the turf. Just a few days ago, he liquidated a large portion of his Tinta Roja stable in a public auction, and his words proved why: "I had more than 70 horses in training; I bet on the turf, but the purses are paid after 60 days, and the bills cannot be late. It is an impossible business."

Words shared by the vast majority of owners, to which must be added that the purses themselves are already low. The turf placed him before a paradox as striking as it was hopeful, shocking him, making him waver between happiness, emotion, and reality.

But the man, a turfman of many years, pressed his prized red beret tightly against his head, embraced his family, and savored the moment to celebrate the victory of the daughter of Made You Look, who paid 41.55 pesos but crossed the wire with the solvency of a favorite.

Within a field filled with strong names, including several coming off impressive maiden wins, the victory ultimately went to the chestnut trained in La Plata by Carlos Domingo. She had not raced in three months, since securing her first win there over 1000 meters.

Taking a big leap in distance, in her first Palermo appearance, and assuming the role of pacemaker from the first jump, Gran Gotera delivered a performance where bravery and grit blended with speed.

Martín Valle wanted gate 1 to lead all the way; he got it in the draw and took care of the rest. He placed the granddaughter of Key Deputy at the front, where she first faced pressure from Achispada (Have At It) and then, in the final stages, resisted the charge of Personal Filly (Dabster) to hold her off by a neck in 1m30s93/100. Two and a half lengths back, the favorite Live Your Life (Dabster) finished third.

Bred by Haras Gran Muñeca, Gran Gotera surprised nearly everyone in the Atucha. She moved her connections and built one of those stories told by the dozens in horse racing, transforming a difficult moment into one of massive emotion.

Jorge Brunasco and his words were a reflection of this current moment in Argentine racing, where passion continues to run alongside the economy, but with fewer and fewer chances to hold on. Fortunately, a Gran Gotera appears and ensures that, for just a while longer, passion pulls ahead...
