The 2026 renewal of the G1 Gran Premio República Argentina (2000m, dirt) will feature one of its smallest fields in recent years, with just eight runners entered for Palermo’s most important race of the season for older horses, to be run—as tradition dictates—on May 1, Labor Day.

With a winner’s purse of ARS 100,000,000 and open to horses aged three and up, the race will headline a blockbuster program alongside the G1 Gran Premio Criadores (2000m), G1 De las Américas–OSAF (1600m), G1 Ciudad de Buenos Aires (1000m), G1 Montevideo (1500m), and G1 Jorge de Atucha (1500m).

All eyes will be on the rematch between Butterfing (Angiolo) and Need You Tonight (Hat Trick), who fought out the finish of the G1 Gran Premio de Honor. The latter returns as defending champion, having captured this race in 2025.

Trained by Juan Saldivia, Butterfing had been third in last season’s G1 Gran Premio Nacional before reappearing with an impressive allowance victory. He then stepped back into top company and delivered his best performance yet, defeating the Haras El Wing runner in the Honor.

For his part, Need You Tonight had not raced since October, when he competed in the G1 Gran Premio Latinoamericano at Gávea. His connections are expecting a step forward off that return, which could make this rematch even tighter with the gray.

Another key contender is El Emporio (Il Campione), third in the Honor after a strong showing. The bay had previously dominated the division, stringing together seven consecutive stakes wins at Palermo, including the G2 Clásico Otoño, which opened the Campeonato Palermo de Oro.

Also of interest is the potential return of Vota Bien (Hi Happy), winner of the G1 Clásico Perú, later second in the G1 Copa de Oro, and most recently an excellent fourth behind Brazilian champion Obataye (Courtier) in the G1 Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini—finishing as the second-best Argentine in that race.

The field includes another G1 winner in Unico Happy (Hi Happy), runner-up to El Emporio in the Otoño before finishing sixth in the Honor. He had earlier starred at two with a victory in the G1 Gran Criterium and later added the G2 Joaquín V. González.

Billion (Galicado) and Buen Escoses (Bodemeister) also come through the Honor. The former closed well to finish fourth, just 2 1/2 lengths behind Butterfing, edging the latter—who had set the pace—by a nose.

Rounding out the likely lineup is Private Blend (Lucullan), a progressive runner who recently notched his third allowance victory after finishing fifth in the G3 Gran Premio Vicente Dupuy at La Punta.

The total entry fee for the República Argentina stands at ARS 4,260,000, with ARS 3,834,000 due at final declaration time, set for Monday at noon. Later that day, Palermo will host the traditional post-position draw, with jockey assignments also to be confirmed.
