RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Special to Turf Diario)— Sunday at Hipódromo da Gávea delivered everything South American racing offers at its peak: emotion, tight finishes, and the rise of new stars. In the Grande Prêmio Cruzeiro do Sul (G1)—the Rio Derby—Oderich etched his name into the history books with pure drama.
The son of Drosselmeyer and Energia Garoa (Agnes Gold), bred by Haras Anderson and racing for Stud Cariri PE/Stud Sampaio, prevailed by the narrowest of margins in a vibrant finish over 2400 meters on heavy turf.
Under jockey Altair Domingos, Oderich tracked the early pace set by Elton (Outstrip). Turning for home, Oderich and Zucca Baby (Hofburg) surged past the leader to engage in a sensational head-to-head battle. Neither gave an inch in the final strides, with the photo finish confirming Oderich the winner by a nose. The final time was 2:26.49.
The victory marked the third Derby win at Gávea for trainer Luiz Esteves, who also conditioned four of the first five finishers.
Later in the card, Odalisca reaffirmed her dominance among the fillies in the Grande Prêmio Zélia Gonzaga Peixoto de Castro (G1). The daughter of Sangarius and Jennifer Aniston (Kodiak Kowboy), bred by Haras Santa Rita da Serra, handled the 2400 meters with authority.
Jockey H. Fernandes kept the favorite expectant while Veil (Can the Man) set the fractions. In the straight, Odalisca launched a powerful outside bid, sweeping past her rivals in the final 150 meters to win geared down by two lengths. Stopping the clock in 2:27.11, she secured her second G1 victory and cemented her status as a divisional leader.
