Rallying from the tail of the field, the Stud El Ángel de Venecia runner charged late to nip Cazador de Areco by a head on the line in the Clásico Yatasto (G3); returning to the 2,400-meter distance, the 2025 Gran Premio 25 de Mayo (G1) winner displayed all his class

There are victories that can be explained by a simple result, and others that demand to be watched over and over again. The performance of Honest Boy in the Clásico Yatasto (G3) belongs squarely to the latter category. When he seemed hopelessly beaten, when the pacesetter had opened up a margin that suggested the race was already iced, he materialized on the outside, stretching out with immense courage to rewrite the script right on the wire.

That was the dramatic kickoff to Saturday's stakes sequence surrounding the Gran Premio Jockey Club (G1) meeting, marking the return to center stage for a horse whose modest frame and nagging health setbacks have never dimmed his sheer class. The winner of the 2025 Gran Premio 25 de Mayo (G1) proved once more that when he can express himself at full strength, he remains a force to be reckoned with.

He was coming off a sixth-place finish in the Gran Premio Estrellas Classic (G1) over 2,000 meters. Now, back at 2,400 meters—his natural distance—he found the ideal setting to rediscover his finest form. And he did so through a performance packed with suspense, adversity, and the kind of heart-stopping finish that defines the passion of horse racing.

Jockey Eduardo Ortega Pavón dropped him far off the pace, holding last for a major portion of the journey while Curious Song (Sixties Song) set the tempo. There was a mountain of turf to make up, and as they swung into the home stretch, the rider initially looked for room along the inside before steering his mount toward mid-track around the 500-meter pole.

The response was not immediate. Honest Boy was running greenly, struggling to change leads and taking his time to find the gear required to launch a menacing bid. Up ahead, everything appeared to be falling into place for Cazador de Areco (Long Island Sound), who struck the lead at the 300-meter mark and established an advantage that seemed insurmountable.

Yet the best was still to come. Once he finally leveled off, the chestnut was relentless. Every stride ate into the lead; every meter brought a once-remote possibility closer to reality. Out wide, giving every ounce of himself, he hunted down the leader until nabbing him in the final stride: a head in his favor to seal a magnificent victory.

The clock stopped at 2:26.78, a highly respectable time over a wet surface. Four lengths back, Brazilian-bred Oh l'Amour (Drosselmeyer) finished third, with Neat Colt (Treasure Beach) a nose behind in fourth. The winner of the Estrellas Classic, who had bested Honest Boy on that occasion, had to watch him sweep past this time.

The flip side was favorite Don Logrado (Fortify), who finished last, over 64 lengths adrift. A margin of that magnitude suggests the possibility of a physical setback, though without confirmed medical reports, it is impossible to attribute a cause. Crazy Talent (Equal Talent) also failed to land a blow on his return, finishing eighth, beaten 41 lengths.

For Honest Boy, it was his fourth victory in 13 career starts. The son of Heliostatic is a full brother to Group 1 winner Hole In One, was bred by Haras Santa María de Araras, and carries the colors of Stud El Ángel de Venecia.

His thrilling conquest kicked off an unforgettable afternoon for trainer Carlos Daniel Etchechoury, who later went on to capture the Jockey Club for the tenth time, this time courtesy of Stay Tune (Fortify). But before that celebration unfolded, Honest Boy had already etched an indelible image: that of a racehorse who, with everything stacked against him and the wire closing in fast, found the inner reserve to pull it off. A single head was all it took to reward such remarkable heart.
