A Joaquín S. de Anchorena (G1) winner with top-tier pedigree and an outstanding physique, Huapango Torero will stand alongside the proven Safety Check and champion Interaction.

With a new breeding season in Argentina still a few months away, the stallion market is slowly gaining momentum. Recently, Marsalis (Curlin) was announced as the newest addition to Haras La Leyenda, and now another exciting development has emerged, this time featuring one of the finest locally bred horses in recent years.
Through an agreement with Haras Pozo de Luna, the outstanding miler Huapango Torero will soon arrive at Haras María Alicia, located in Coronel Moldes, Córdoba, to begin his stud career alongside the well-established Safety Check (Dubawi) and champion Interaction (Easing Along).
A son of the remarkable Suggestive Boy (Easing Along), Huapango Torero had a distinguished racing career despite dealing with injuries that sidelined him for extended periods.
After breaking his maiden at three over a mile on San Isidro’s turf, he quickly stepped up to 2000 meters and secured his first stakes victory in the Clásico Botafogo (G3). However, he struggled in the Gran Premio Martínez de Hoz (G1) and remained off the track for over a year.
His comeback saw him win over 2200 meters before finishing third in both the Clásico Otoño (G2) and Clásico Forli (G2). Another setback kept him away from racing for 14 months.
Returning with a victory in the Clásico New Dandy (1600m), he then placed third in the Gran Premio San Isidro (G1) before delivering the performance of his career. Huapango Torero closed out 2023 with a thrilling late charge to capture the Gran Premio Joaquín S. de Anchorena (G1), defeating top-level runners such as Intense for Me (Fortify), Satu (Catcher In the Rye), Vespaciano (Daniel Boone), Bamb Craf (Mastercraftsman), and Comando Secreto (War Command).
He later added runner-up finishes in the Clásico 9 de Julio (G2) and Clásico Blend (L), as well as fourth-place efforts in both the Gran Premio Martínez de Hoz (G1) and Clásico América (G2) before being retired.
A physically imposing horse, Huapango Torero also boasts a pedigree filled with depth. His dam, Happy Queen (Roy), was a multiple G3 winner, taking the Clásico Chile (G3) and Clásico Victorica Roca (G3). She also produced Henestrosa (Treasure Beach), a G2 winner, as well as Hontoria (Suggestive Boy) and Huetzca (Easing Along), both G3-placed. The latter is the dam of Hulsman (Portal del Alto), a G2-placed performer. Another of Happy Queen’s daughters, Happy Year (Giant’s Causeway), is the dam of Hedy (Interaction).
His second dam, Afrodite (Ocean Falls), was a G1 winner and a half-sister to Storm Girl (Mountdrago), the dam of Chloris (Ibero), who captured the Estrellas Juvenile Fillies (G1).
“He was an exceptional horse who had his challenges but still won a G1 and carries an attractive pedigree. On top of that, he is a stunning individual. Argentina’s best homebreds have consistently proven themselves as sires when given a chance, and we are confident Huapango Torero will follow that path. We have great examples in Cosmic Trigger (Lizard Island), Hi Happy (Pure Prize), Angiolo (Grand Reward), Le Blues (Roman Ruler), Equal Stripes (Candy Stripes), and now Strategos (Zensational),” said Federico Costanzo, owner of Haras María Alicia, expressing his excitement for this new endeavor.
